Hi, there. It seems that a lot of people say that mushrooms split like crazy, and before long, you'll be bombarded with mushroom coral. I have some hairy mushrooms, and some brown-ish colored ones that just have not split. When the lights are on, they'll expand like crazy, though. They are in a 25 gallon with 2 X 65 PC lights. Once a week, I add in trace elements, iron, iodine, calcium, zooplex, strontium, coral-vite ... and although polyps have split, the mushrooms haven't. What could be the issue here? There is coralline growth (the pink stuff, right?) all along the glasa and live rock.

Comments? Suggestions?

Thanks,
Jamie

Hi, the tank has been set up for almost 5 months now. 15% water changes are about once a month. The 'shrooms used to be in another fish tank before I set this one up 5 months ago. In the other tank, they did not have great lighting--only the typical flourescent lights.

It takes a while. After a year now, mine have about doubled, to give you a range of time.

It will happen.

When people tell you in this hobby that things reproduce quickly, you have to think in a year span, not months.

I do not fully understand mushroom reproduction. I have had them in tanks for months with no splitting. I have also had them in tanks where they are out of control. I have seen differences between different types of mushrooms in the same tank. So I have no idea what the factors are that determine whether the mushroom will split or not. But as mentioned, you can either have patience, or you can become more pro-active, and split the mushooms yourself. Just take a razor and cut them in half (or smaller if you feed adventurous). Make sure each piece has a part of the mouth. Pin these pieces to a piece of rock and put them in a low flow area. They should all grow into new mushrooms. You can also just the entire disk of a mushroom off of a rock, and the part of its foot that remains will grow into a new mushroom. For more info on this, do a search for mushroom splitting or propogation. HTH
