For the last 2 weeks my green star has not been opening. Nothing has changed in terms of flow location lighting or anything else. Following is what my tank is testing at

SG 1.025
Trate 0
Trite 0
Phosphate 0
Calcium 430
KH 8.5
Temp is 79 - 80

This happened once before in old tank, right before moving to new tank. Once put into new tank it opened up fine. Since being in the new tank it has almost doubled in size, so it appeared very happy. Following is a list of fish

powder blue tang
sailfin tang
2 tank raised percs
3 blue green chromis
and 1 yellow tail damsel(he snuck into the new tank)

Any ideas???

my corals, well, most of them anyway, seem to go through phases.
every so often this may happen. green star won't open, or perhapse some mushrooms won't fully open, and it doesn't seem to have anything to do with anything. all parameters are the same, nothing new added to the tank, no changes. then a few days will go by and everything's back to normal. i dunno. maybe it's some sort of normal pattern.

Does yours ever last a couple weeks? I noticed you said a few days.. I have been using that philosphy for about a week now, and decided to make this post finally. The polyps are still raised off of the purple matt, there is just no sign of the pretty part... Thanks for your input X...

A couple of weeks ago is when you posted you were leaving the hobby. I think it is depressed. Does your star polyp have internet access?

i don't think it has lasted a couple weeks yet, but who knows, it might sometime. but as i said, nothing is out of the ordinary. shavo's tank has the same occurrences. this is why i don't get alarmed.

They do that, close up and sulk for a while. I wouldn't worry unless they start receeding or going all gooey.

I had the same thing happen a while back and it was a couple of damsels that were nipping at them (theyr'e gone now). Watch your chromis and damsel for nipping. It doesn't take much to have them withdraw an protect themselves.

Thanks, I hope that is not the case because the blue with yellow tail will not leave the tank... Unless I buy a lion fish. Sorry i know that is not a nice thing to do, but it may come to that...

It has been just over a month and finally the green polyp is poking back out today. It is not fully open, but it has started. Hopefully tomorrow it is back to normal. Oddly enough it was 2 days ago today that my PBT was taken back to the LFS. I never saw him nip though.

I just wanted to say that my green star has opened back up, but has not fully extended. I have a smaller frag about the same level in the tank with the same flow that is fully open. He is perfectly fine. All my levels are outstanding .There has not been any changes to anything else in the tank. Please advise..

The green star part is exposed, but you can still see the purple matt underneath. Before you could never see the base through the polyps.
