After years of not having a marine tank, but just memories I am brought back to the wonderful world of the sea. Well it all started with the death of the one great uncle that meant the world to me. Mourning the lost of my uncle with my uncle’s wife in Brooklyn NYC we sit and talk about the good old times. To find out that not only I had love for the art of the sea in a tank. Thinking I knew all there was to know about marine fish, I ask to meet up with a cousin that I had not seen in more then ten years , I started something that I hope never ends to the end of time. We did nothing but talk about marine fish, coral and anything that had to do with the sea. Well I asked them to visit me in PA and they did two times and the second time they brought me a gift that I will never forget, the start of a ten gallon Reef tank, so I can get into the world of Mini Reef tanks. So the morn of one love one, brings me close to someone that is so like me with a great family and love to sell. When I was in the sport of salt water fish it was impossible to start a reef tank unless you started with a 30 gallon or more and now any size is possible. Here are a few pictures of the start into the mini reef tank world, and I am so excited.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Chris Medina (AKA Skimmer Man)

looks like a good start... can you tell us a little about the equipment you have. Also, put that shrimp in a net. If not it will fall apart and make a mess when it's time to take it out.

Welcome to the addiction. Best of luck

hi there.

I think your filter is called a Hang on Back Skimmer.

For a 10G tank(small tank) two most important factors are auto top off, and temperature control. If your ambient temperature is high and too many equipment there you could end up boiling your reef. One cheap but effective cooling method is to use a fan blowing across the top and since that you seems to be a PC junkie, you should know how to recycle couple old fans. Now evaporation will be high, so you MUST have an Auto Top Off which could simply be an invert bottle with a flow valve. 10G would not cost too much in using bottled distillated water, or alternatively go get a RO/DI filter. Ebay has something like $100 shipped or Buckeye(check the sponsors forum) has a very fast 150GPD version.

When doing open top, make sure you choose live stock accordingly so that they don't carpet surf. some people will make a canopy to cover all the diy fan, light and stuff. Surf more in the forum, you will find them.

I do SELL LED main light and moon light for Nano Tanks that are stylish and in GREAT SHAPE. Check my forum under vendors

Hi Chris,

Welcome to MR. I would suggest you do some reading before you add livestock to your tank. You filtration is lacking and a few fish will turn your tank into an algae ball.....seriously.
There are so many ways to correct this, I wouldn't even know where to start.
The best suggestion that I could give you is to find a reef that you admire (check tank thread forum) and do you best to mimic it in equipment + stocking.

Take care

Thanks for the great Welcome, Great people make a Great forums.

Well this is just my 3rd day in the mini reef hobby and so far you guys make me want to stay up all night reading all the forums on this site. Thanks for caring, starting Monday I am going to try to buy as much I can to help my little reef creation live a long life the right way, so please keep the information coming, I so hooked. I am thinking of starting up a bigger setup after I get this tank going good, so I can keep busy, not much to do around here so I have alot of time to give to Scuba Diving from the Sofa.

Thanks again, Great group of people.:groupflip

You could always take a ride to lancaster and visit That pet place. Very nice place, great prices and an MR sponsor.

Here guys this is the third day and ever since I put in the shrimp the tank got cloudy, is it OK? Well I took some reading on the tank. I used "Quick Dip" for Na, Ni, Alk and PH and I also used "API Test Kit" for Ammonia and here are my results. Here are a few pics.

Ammonia - 0.50
Nitrate - 40
Nitrite -.5
Alkalinity - 300
PH - 7.8

I guess not bad for a three day old tank.
But remember she is still a Baby :bagfish::party: Look, She is starting to crawl.
