A phosban reactor is the best way to use the product. But in the meantime it wouldn't hurt to place it in a net bag in the flow in your in your fuge. Just make sure it isn't getting pounded with water as it will cause it to break into tiny pieces and it will then do more harm than good.
Also be SURE to rinse it totally ..with rodi water..before you use it. The rinse water must run clear.

Since you used tap water at first, it is going to take quite some time to get the phosphates that your rock & sand have absorbed out of your tank entirely.

Russ...So you don't have to change it as often?
Doesn't affect the performance?

Would you suggest that if the tank were on the smallish side?
Just curious :)

K, it can only absorb what's in the water. It can't be used up faster than it can absorb the PO4. At least this is my theory. And if it's not being used up as quick, then yes, you don't have to change it as frequently. I'm sure the packaging reads the way it does almost as a disclaimer.

do not pack your reactors full of phosban or other GFO products. it needs to be able to move a bit.

Agreed Jon. After I posted that I looked at my reactors and they'd be too stuffed with more than the suggested amount..with no room to move. Every now & then when they 'burp' the media would get dangerously close to going into the output hose...
I'll stick with stocking/changing it as recommended by the manufacturer.

 I dump the entire 150g pack into my reactor and it fills it about 1/3 of the way up. Am I missing something here? Are there other reactors I don't know about?

I have only a 26 gallon bowfront with a refugium which occupies the back part of the tank, and a MH fixture that sits atop the aquarium. I am concerned that the reactor won't fit anywhere. any suggestions?

How long you should wait to replace the media? To me, it's like a wild guess.

If I wait until I see algae, or until I can read my phosphates on test kits, it'd be too late...
