Getting Out of the Hobby Sale

keep the tank as it is. its hard to get back in once you get out, because you need to buy new equipment. Take a break from the internet for a while. go to the swap. maybe we can dissuade you.

I've been quiet for a while now.

I don't normally post.. never really have much too say.. too many opinions and who is to say if mine is the right one or the wrong one... life is what it is I guess..

maybe it is my place to say something.. maybe it isn't.. but bottom line.. what happened to this "hobby"??

it is a "hobby"??? right?? I mean.. damn.. 12 years ago.. me a rich (rstimeout) in westchester pet.. lol.. waiting for the best fish to come in so we could dump them in our tanks first.. airport runs.. the excitment newest skimmer.. the converstations in the store on how to better your tank?? hleping the customers out?? the fun of it.. ??

it is supposed to be fun??? right??.. you are supposed to meet nice people who want to help out of the good of saving the reefs and helping others?? no???

the help isnt supposed to be dependent upon the fact if you have a nice sps tank with frags or you know a vendor who can get you a better deal right??

the more i venture into it.. the more i find nonsense about competing sites, money deals, tank breakdowns.. people buying other peoples things at wopping low prices only for resale to make some chump change.. I mean.. seriously.. in the end.. what is a $100 dollars in this hobby? It is nothing compared to what we put into it???

I may not talk much.. but i know the two you refer too well enough. and it really isn't my place to say this.. but i will say it becasue no one else seems to have the balls.. the two that pressure you to make a decision about sides are really the ones who need to be in question about retiring.. they represent two sites in this so called "community"??? They are the ones that need to realize.. THEY ARE THE PROBLEM. YOU are the LEADERS.. whether you like it or not.. you chose to run these sites.. just like the vendors chose to operate their stores.. and anyone else who chooses to place themself in a "leadership" position. you are the LEADERS to this "hobby". so act like one because what type of example do you set by putting people in positions like this over your own personal gains??

some people got lucky, got a site, and had some success.. it isn't hard to do.. and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to do it. they are not gods.. and if they were "real friends" there wouldnt be any pressure. I understand you feel stuck.. so instead of facing it.. you would rather leave.. I guess I dont blame you.. sometimes it isnt worth it.. I dont know much about you.. never met.. but I heard a lot of good things..

ultimately in the end.. no one can tell you what to do.. maybe you are looking for a break.. and this is the perfect reason for it?? OR.. maybe you just dont want to face them.. and this is a cry for help?? OR maybe you just dont want to deal with all the nonsense anymore..

I can understand the latter.. I came back to this hobby 9 months ago.. I was welcomed by a few people.. they help me with my tank.. and still do to this day.. people wonder why i dont post.. or have more contact.. and it is for REASONS exactly like this. This is not a community.. neither is any other site.. becasue when i hear the word community.. i think of people who work together to help each other out with 1 GOAL in mind. this.. other sites like it.. it all comes down to money. PURE MONEY. I guess what doesnt in life?? the business of the situation.. that is what it is all about.. this isnt a hobby anymore.. this is a business.. who has the better site.. the better equipment.. so forth and so on.. i guess that is what makes me an artist and not a business person.. the fact that i will never "get it"

now dont get me wrong.. there are still alot of wonderful people in this hobby.. people who still call it a hobby.. and treat it like a hobby. i have met ALOT of them.. they have helped me get to where i need to be.. but becasue the LOVE the HOBBY! not becasue of something to gain.. these people who LOVE the hobby.. those are the ones i feel bad for.. WE.. are the ones who suffer and get hurt. BECASUE of the business of it.

we all lose site of what is really important in life.. espeically when we get a taste of success.. or we live for revenge.. sometimes it is difficult.. i have been there.

in the end. we have glass boxes filled with saltwater. pumps. bright ligths. fish. hermit crabs and some colored growing calcium.

we try to do our best with them.. we do not run the county, we do not design nuclear bombs.. and we certainly are not curing cancer.

and i ask all of you.. is this really that serious?? becasue if it is that serious.. might as well delete me now.. becasue this "hobby" really isn't fun any more.

I dont know you. and to be honest.. you leaving will never really effect me. you seemed like a cool dude. but if you have to leave.. you have to do what you have to do to better your life.. so good luck either way. I know the people you deal with will both read this.. and they both know who I am.. and ultimately.. no disrespect to either.. but if this dude is your friend.. then be a friend.. and let him do what he does.. let EVERYONE enjoy the hobby and keep the nonsense away from them..

if there must be a war. if polotics and business is the basis of your exisitence.. then leave it between the ones who want it/live it.. and leave the rest out.

anyways.. its too bad it had to turn out like this.. every day.. it just seems to get worse and worse between these "community" sites.. becomming more political and more about the business.

I will probably regret even writing this.. I am probably better off staying quite.. I guess some things just need to be said.. i guess.. that's what a LEADER does.

I would not recommend you to stay or go because I think I should respect your own choice of life.

Obviously, you have thoughtfully think about this thing before writing up this thread, so do what pleases you best.

If we really have never met, hope we will when you return.

If anything the thread shows that 1: people like you, and 2: people are passionate about reefing,
so it's not bad imo.
