This is a piece that has come a LONG way in terms of color. It is currently lit at the bottom of my 300g by a 250w 15k XM. The very outside of the rim is purple, and then the middle portion is gun metal blue, and the inside of the rim is green. The main body color is orange and it has pink eyes.

There are two nodules growing up out of the center of the coral and their predominant color is the gun metal blue. I am curious to see what these do as far as growth and color. Photos are as the coral appears in my tank. The coral is approximately 4" across, and is a fast grower.

I was going to name this spectacular coral Jeff. But decided on Daniels' Orange Rainbow Rim Chalice.

To give you some idea what I mean by "fast" growth, the first picture was taken Nov 3, 2005. The other pictures were just this evening, barely 3 months later.

Gorgeous piece, Marc! Hope it turns out to be a rare color-morph.

The name's kind of long, though  When I first saw it, I thought of the sunset. But, there's already the Sunset Monti. What do you think of...

...Daniels' Eventide Chalice

Either this was sarcasm or Karl is color blind ;) That is one gorgeous chalice, and those vertical growths are wild!

I've never thought about putting my chalices on the sandbed, but I think I'm gonna have to try now :)

Len-

I have no idea how rare of a morph it is...all I know is that it is one of my nicest looking LPS corals. I wonder how fast it would grow with active feeding. Also, the growth really seems to have taken off since adding the calcium reactor.

I agree...the vertical growth is really cool, and something that I have not seen in other Echino corals. I am realy waiting to see what they do color wise.

I just don't have the guts to frag it yet. I would like it to get a little more size before I whack a piece off it.

 I like the piece A LOT! I'm just reserved about anything 'chalice'. There are so many Echinophyllia, Echinopora, Echinomorpha, Mycedium coming in with the chalice tag, that it's too soon to say what's rare. At least in my eyes.

At any rate, that piece would get by just on looks alone :D

Wow, simply a beautiful specimen and cool color morph. That's some pretty awesome growth in just 4 months. I have found that my chalices grow much faster in a nutrient rich environment. I had a few pieces that weren't really growing much in my SPS dominated tank at home. When I brought them into my work tank, which is skimmerless, they grew at a much more accelerated rate. I normally just feed the tank and never direct fed them.

Good info Kenny. Too bad I only have one tank at the moment, but I've been toying with the idea of starting a small "squat" low-light tank.

Karl, ya, I understand your perception; I see nice "chalices" all the time coming through LA. Then again, I see tons of Acropora, Montipora, Acans, and even Blastos that give any "limited edition" coral a run for their money :P Of those, I think only blastos will be fairly "rare" since they grow so slowly and aren't as propagatable (yay, a new word!).

Very true. Unfortunately, not everyone is successful with SPS. As easy as Monti's are, acans and chalices are even easier and grow a lot faster. Market saturation is inevitable (i.e. xenia).

The Blasto is a good example of a 'rare', because it's such a slow grower.

sweet piece Marc, LMK if you ever frag it!

As far as the growth goes it will encrust and grow over what ever it is mounted to I have one with similar growth like that. Not to hijack your thread but here is a pic

Hey Rob-

The vertical growth is a new direction and isn't somethign that the coral grew over. When I got the coral a year or so ago it was a 1"x1" frag.

I'll let you know if I frag it though.

Gresham-

No, I didn't get it at a swap, but it did come out of the Bay Area. Once when Shawn was down there someone gave him some frags, and he came back and sold them to me. This is what one of the pieces turned into. The other chalice that he was given and sold to me turned a brillinat green with powder blue rim.

Have you seen something like it down there?

I believe Gresham may be thinking of the chalice James at Aquascene had. Tyree took it LE. I had a bunch I fragged for swaps.

Hey Jim-

I wasn't aware that Tyree had any such coloration in his stable. I checked his site a few days ago, and didn't see anything near to being orange. I have also searched the general online community and have not found any orange. Shawn got it from someone down there on one of his trips...it may have come from TP...or someone affiliated with TP. I thought it may have come from you.

Actually Jim, I was thinking about a colony you and I split and I gave some to Shawn, and put some into several swaps for my "rare" :D Your piece did end up at Aquascene, but only after you left :D

That's very well where mine probably came from then. He brought them back and sold them to me, I thought he had purchased them from a store, but he later told me that they had been given to him. He also brought back a bright green chalice with blue rim that he told me was given to him. Gresham, this would have been right around a year ago.
