this is the tank at a week after getting 45# fiji live rock from DR foster, only a strip light as of now.

after about 3 months, getting 2x96w PC lights, and a CSS 65, and about 30# of rock and some corlas from my 29g tank algea is starting to take over.

the sump i had been using

at 5 months after getting a 150w MH, an RO unit from lowes, and putting in a 29g sump. i had to remove all the water and rocks from the tank to put in the 29 sump( due to some terrible measuring by me) the sump ended up fitting with less then one inch clearance on all sides

the hair algea has been with me for about 4 months, even after a clean up crew, aggressive water changes, and an RO unit it will not go away, any suggestions?

my nitrates were through the roof when i got my test kit a while back, and scince getting my RO unit 2 weeks ago i have been doing 5g water changes once a day (is this to much?) and the nitrates have not shown much decline? the tank is 50g so thats 10%

also i just got a saltifert calcium test kit and im not sure if im using it wrong but it says my calcium is around 550 is this bad?

i have always wanted a tang, would i be able to have a tang in there, its a 50g so i thought that would be to small? are there any tangs that do not grow too large?

id pull the rock out and scrub it with a brush. cut back on hours of light. increase water flow and get alot of turbo snails and a seahare. and check nutrient levels cut back on feeding

I wouldnt do water changes everyday. that is too much. try doing it once a week and you should do better. i also saw that your temp is nearly 80 so i would lower it to about 72-74 and how much hours of lighting are you doing? Getting a Yellow Tang in there is not a bad idea since it will take care of most of your alage but i dont know if you are ready for one so just get another opinion for that. BTW the tank looks great but i am a bit confused........ At one picture its different aquascaping then the other. Did you change it around? Good luck.

when i put in the 29g sump i had to drain the tank and take out the rocks,so it would fit. it was disastrous, lost a fish and frog spawn. so i put some rocks in the sump and re aquascaped i still dont know witch way i like better

and i fixed the temp to stay at 77-78

Tang will eventually get to big for your tank, and you will have to find it a new home. Or upgrade:wink1:. Besides, there is no guarantee that the one you get will actually eat the algea.
Get a phosban reactor(change out the media every 3 weeks initially). Another phosban reactor to run carbon(changed out weekly), and do 10% weekly water changes.
That is what I've been doing since Feb., and I have not seen anymore hair algea or red slime since. My tank always had one or the other for years.

An option you have s a satan lightfoot crab but they get really nasty and tend to become hunters of fish and inverts after a while.

bored and waiting for sopranos, some fish pics.
and a questions. i want to get a manderin eventually. i see a couple pods in the fuge when i turn on the light but i dont think im ready yet. i have a sponge in the baffle after the fuge and before the return, i clean it every other day, will this prevent the pods from making their way into the main tank so the mandarin could eat?
