The nightmare tank has been at it again!

Thought all was well, and it was for a month or so. Suddenly without obvious reason fish began dying. The first to go was the Majestic Angelfish (Pomacanthus navarchus), followed by the Yellow Dwarf Angelfish (Centropyge heraldi) a few weeks later, not long after it had been introduced into the tank the Sohal Tang (Acanthurus sohal) whom I got from another MR member/friend overnight was covered in ich/Cryptocaryon, and died that same day. Shortly after I lost the Niger Trigger (Odonus niger), Rusty Dwarf Angelfish (Centropyge ferrugata), Orange Toadfish (Opsanus beta), and finally the Red Coris Wrasse (Coris gaimard).
.
The following are the original fish from before the crash with the exception of the coral beauty that are still doing fine.
Zebra Eel (Gymnomuraena zebra)
Snowflake Eel (Echidna nebulosa)
(Six Line Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus hexataenia)
Pink Skunk Clown (Amphiprion perideraion)
Clarkii Clown (Amphiprion clarkii)
Coral Beauty Dwarf Angelfish (Centropyge bispinosa)

The other animals within the tank anemones, and 2 lg red hermit crabs are doing just fine as well. And the darn blue hex palys have also managed to come back although not only did they dye during the crash, but all the rocks they were on were scraped with a razor.

I have no idea what is happening in there. All test are within acceptable parameter at least for what I do test. PH, Sg, Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates. Although when I lost the last fish I ran all the test again, and did see a trace of ammonia, but never before.

Now I am so frustrated, and disgusted with this tank that I have decided to be rid of it. I put it on Craig's list.;(

Is it possible that the eels stirring up the 3" sand bed are causing ammonia spikes that may be the cause of the demise of the fish? Should this tank go bb?

Thanks for the compliment Harry!

I'm sorry to hear about this Awilda.. I think you might be on to something with the eel, although I haven't heard it happening before. (obviously I'm not sure, but it's worth looking into.) How often are you checking your water? and do you have good test kits?

Harry, I also wish I could have kept the sohal.:( Unfortunately I lost it, as well as the friendship of the one that gave him to me apparently.;(

Eric, I was testing everyother day, and every time a fish died! Test kits are new.....

Sorry for your loss.

What are the causes of Ammonia? All i know:
- Stocking too many fish at one time
- Overfeeding fish
- Not having enough snails, hermits etc to clean up any uneaten food
- Mature filter to buffer the Ammnia spike

Must be many reason and I know you did everything you could. Sorry for your loss.

Could very well be the filtration not being mature enough since the tank did crash not long ago.
What I am wondering is:
What happens when the eels disturb the 3" sand bed down to the very bottom? What comes up out of the sand that may cause problems?
I know we are not suppose to disturb the sand withing the top 1/2" or so so that we don't disturb the anerobics. This is why I am thinking that this is what is happening to any new fish introduced.:(
