I purchased an upflow algae scrubber from Santa Monica filtration. Works great in my opinion. Have it running for nearly 2mo and no signs of algae in the main display. I'd recommend it if you want to go the upflow route.

Matt...I was thinking of doing one a few years ago and know a few guys who have tried them....on a smaller system they maybe worth it, but in larger systems you need a large surface area to be effective...every little bit helps I guess, but not worth it IMO...there are plenty of articles on them...

Thanks guy !
Mike I've never read the articles ill do a search but have heard of guys really likeing the results from them!
I'm gonna take a long time plAnning this system it's not goon be the monster I really wanted because after buying a house prob won't have 2 cents to rub together!
A major concern for me on this system is power use so if I could go skimmer less I think that would be great

Nice tread I'm looking into them as well I'm hoping to get rid of the need for gfo and from what I saw It does the trick for some people . I never had a huge po4 problem but my no3 gets out of controll from time to time would this also keep no3 low or vodka is still the way to go in keeping no3 low ?

I try, i build list 8-10, never got any luck, i think work, if u got huge PO4, like 0.75....up. Also i seed the screen w/small piece of hair algae, i got nothing than brown staff, wash the first 3 days, than again and again, i increase evaporation + heat (pump), take lots of space from, swamp, i think is much easy to grow macro algae (cheato macroalgae) (not sure if is the best, for SPS) or use GFO.

I'd recommend going to AlgaeScrubber.net to soak up as much info as you can, there is some great information on there..
