Ok Ive have these two tangs, one yellow and a purple both were put in the tank with in a month of each other and have been in the tank for at least 5 months. The purple tang would sometimes mess with the yellow but nothing to worry about. Well now the yellow tang keeps bullying the purple into a cave and gaurds him from coming out. now its starting to show on the purple tang (stress) and I dont want to lose him. My tank is large 225 and its impossible to catch the yeloow tang, I tried. What do I do? :irked:

You have to split them up. The purple tang needs time to recover and relieve the stress caused by the yellow tang or it is going to die. Moving the purple tang from the tank could put it over the top and kill it as well. The only reasonable way to remedy the situation IMO is to remove the yellow tang even at extreme measures. Have you tried traps?

my friend and i caught two kole tangs (about 4-5") using different methods: "the trap" by ultralife and a small fish hook with a crushed barb.

my friend tried using "the trap" but didn't work....more on it later.

since the trap didn't work for him, i got him some small fish hooks, size 18 or 20, split shot weight and clear light weight fishing line from a camping store. we used a plier to crush the barb in to minimize injury when removing it from the fish's mouth. put it all together and went fishing. biggest problem was other fish kept taking the bait. so we had to feed other fish and used tongs to chase away the tang so it'll be hungry enough to bite the hook after all other fish are fully stuffed. it took him several days and lots of patince to catch the tang.

i caught my kole using the trap. the instruction on the box said to set it so that you pull on the clear fishing line to open the trap door and release the line and the weighted door will close on its own. that doesn't work!!! the door kept getting jammed and wouldn't close. you have to thread the line thru the hole on the body of the trap so when you pull the line, it drag the door down to close the trap. the first night i set it up he wouldn't go near it. i put a small tonga branch rock on top to keep it near where i normally feed and left it there so he will get used to the object. the next day i didn't feed until night time to keep him hungry. propped the door open, squirted thawed mysis in, the tang and a wrasse went in so i just trapped them both.

yes both methods took time and patience. i thought the trap was easier than the fish hook but you gotta modify the method a bit. hope this help.

You can also try the light`s out method.Feed the fish and while they are eating have someone shut down all the tank light`s the fish will be stunned and you can grab the tang with a net. You have to be quick and it might take a few time`s to get him. good luck.If that doesen`t work try the inverted top on the one litter bottle trap. Cut the top of the plastic bottle at the curve at top,cut the top where the soda pours out to a size that the tang can get into and put that end into the bottom part of the bottle,so when he swim`s in he can`t get out. Put some food into the bottle to attract the fish. Good luck.....

You might need some egg crate or plexy glass to box him in.What if you divide the tank, 225 gal is a large tank. Just a thought.

I would turn out the lights for about 4 hours and go to the tank with a blacklight in the dark he will glow in the black light but everything else should stay dark and while he is a little sleepy net his A$$.
