Please whatever happens don't make it worse. A person buying wholesale and then selling for profit at the swap should not be told to stop they should be escorted out.
A true swap like the ones you guys had back in the day is the bomb but regardless someone will communicate privately and paypal or is going to say "Well your frag died you got to reimburse me" something will happen, so making it money free with this many members I would think it's hard.
Renaming the swap to Event probably would be nice. What you can do, to possibly charge members, would probably be good for those members who seem to have more than 3 cash transactions and the members who start threads with more than let's say 5 pieces for sale at swap. This could discourage member sales and increase vendor sales or get members to pay and alleviate charges on Vendors.

I remember when hobbyists never sold corals at all--strictly passed them on for the good of the hobby. I also remember when hobbyists would get colonies and actually let them grow and not chop them up until they were truly substantial in size and NEEDED pruning.
Sad but true I hope you don't mind Randy but I will use this quote in my Sig, it made me think.
I would really encourage you to think outside the box, and develop innovative ways to push the boundaries of the hobby and put your own stamp on it, rather than follow the rest of the hobby.

sanjay.
I tried a bowling frag swap once (I asked for Mr approval).... I laugh now because it didn't actually go through and I got all anal about it, even hated Ink for scheduling a boat trip on the same Day (freaking Don). How about a BBQ at a state park that allows for grill cooking. Instead of bringing coolers of drinks we bring coolers of Corals and Livestock. We accept donations for food and volunteers for clean-up.
I think the table setup for members at any event (where vendors are) is a nice idea but have it controlled by a Mr Member to make sure it is a non sale table Like a table just for DBTC. Even vendors could visit and trade and it could help the Hobby.
I would love a demo on how to frag zoas properly! I have gotten better yet still seem to get alot more glue on my fingers!
About a year ago they had a table set up at pace showing us how to frag a brain coral, you should have seen us looking like kindergarten kids looking at a teacher holding a nice coloring Book.

leave it as it IMO. if members get charged for selling, might as well provide them with a tables and all...some vendor pricing were jaw dropping, so if they didnt sell much, they need to rethink their pricing strategies.
You dont see dr mac on here complaining, his prices were great and people purchased from him a lot

i think enough has been said because it seems to me this thread is taking a down turn.

Couldn't agree more. :( It is discouraging to see some of what has been said here. Sadly we weren't part of any reefing community when a swap was just that, a swap (maybe it's all in the name? idk--though from this thread it seems obvious that it also is in the attitude surrounding the function itself). Though I don't see any reason why things have to continue as they are. Don't get me wrong I know members do trade with one another on a private level, which is a great thing and does happen often. Just would be nice to see it happen more often on a larger scale, imo.

All in all the hard work that goes into the swap, the amazing corals and information shared makes the events very worthwhile. I don't think that would change regardless of what fee was charged or how the corals were changing hands.

I liked the swap in general. I think it just needs to be fine tuned as most things do. Threads like this give everyone to give their opinion.

As far as a swap only that kind of keeps out the beginners since we don't have the frags to swap. Hopefully we can find a way to have individual sales and venders.

I bought from both venders and individuals. (Also some free ones, Thanks Josh)
The venders were all very helpful and didn't push to sell. (I got a great deal on some nice acans, 6 heads for $30) With venders you get to see before you buy, but with buying from individuals it is a little more hit or miss.

On that note - I am going to close this thread.
For anyone who did not get to respond and has a wonderful idea that you would like us to consider, please send a message to [email protected]

We thank all of you for your thoughtfulness in answering as we all look toward the future of thinking outside of the glass box.
