I be an xpert. I will vouch for Calireef as being an xpert too. I think it was alot about frustration and not "personal" expertise in any area, that caused him to blow up. I dont really blame him but I will spank him later" after I frag some stuff". Sometimes "and for this board it's true" people are more open with their suggestions because of the closeness of the hobbiests on the board. RC is a multinational board that spans the world now and the info there is offered by some of the foremost authorities on every subject possible. We do not have that here yet except maybe Mr. Solbby :)

What the members of this board need to do is "not" make the basic mistake of thinking they are right without backup information or without being able to explain "why" they offered such opinion. That being said, most suggestions and help are coming from a genuine offer to help someone in need. Lets take it as such and move on.

Now on to more pressing matters. I do not like the turn for the worse that the board has made recently with the foul language and the offensive off color remarks that "children" can easily read without adult knowledge. I can also get out of hand out of fun when talking to "adults" here on the board. Most of do so in jest. But we must remember that there are minors on the board now and as such we all must have more discipline when communicating to each other.

Just my .02

DRZL,

It's not about wits or local for that matter. For example alot of people dont even know what I do for a living and what it took to get there. I have listened to Solbby speak and he dumbfounds me sometimes. If this were a joke I would have written it as such. But since the tone of the statements in this thread were not in a kind tone, I think we should treat each others comments as serious remarks that should be addressed.

Or we can delete this thread and get off everyones ass about small stuff and enjoy the Holidays..

I have to say Hermans first post made me wince, but the sentiment is sincere.

The change in posts and the tone of the board has been noticed by the mods and we have been discussing what were going to do before things get out of hand.

the first thing will be a couple of new forums. one for people just entering the hobby and one for questions of a more expert nature. we feel this will help alleviate some of the frustration being felt and help make the site run a bit more smoothly.
we are excited to have more members join and want to be able to provide the best advice possible. if guided properly the new members will someday be the experts helping new members years from now.

we also want to provide a way for people to write and publish serious articles for both the expert and beginner. and we are working on a faq section which will have answers to many common questions and problems one encounters starting out in this hobby.

I don't know exactly when the changes will take place, but in the meantime please be patient and as Pseudo eloquently pointed out please watch your language.
Thanks all for making Manhattan Reefs one of the best up and coming reef sites out there, and the best local reef resource we all have.

It's getting realy hot inside this chatroom.........so much angst!
Truth is, eventhough there are some irrefutable truths regarding several aspects of the hobby, there is also a lot of grey area. As a person who has been involved in the hobby in various levels particularly in retail. I'm constantly amazed and astounded by some of the situations that people creat in their home tanks without regard to compatability suitability etc. They work for whatever reason peculiar to that tank. So a lot of times you will find that people will give advice based on their own unique experience. Some may say they are wrong but for them it works. So nebie or not they'll post their particular "brand" of advice on MR or wherever. Those of us who recognise the inconsistencies and irregularities if we are truly serious, have a responsibility to guide less experienced users in the right direction. However because we have the knowlege does not entitle us to be scathing rude and snobbish. The hobby is supposed to be fun and to see some of the responses from people who take themselves way too seriously is a definite turn off.

Newbie forum is on the way!!!!!!!!!

As for good readings that can help you have a successful reef.......IME the best reading is from posts of experienced reefers.
I started in this hobby totally retarded. I read GARF's articles and ended up with a skimmerless reef lit by VHO's that didn't do very well. When I give advice to our newer reefers it's because I already messed up like I see happening with some of you guys. Cali-reef, psuedo, herman, solbby, house, Sean etc...we're all in the same boat. At one point or another we all screwed up and thought we were doing the right thing. For example my old plemum SPS reef with a seaclone skimmer.......it didn't take very long until that system was backed up with waste and totally failed :(

My advice to our newer members is to LISTEN, be open minded. Take various opinions under advisement and don't be afraid to ask WHY. Proof is in the pudding so make sure the guys giving the advice has achieved something that you strive for. If you would like my advice send me a PM, I'm very patient...sometimes ;)

1 more thing. The attitudes really have to stop with each other. If you don't agree with someone's advice so be it. Just offer your advice and let people decide.

When guy's are skimmerless and love it, it erks me but I don't say much :D

Not sure if my comments are included with the other knuckle-heads, that post for the sake of posting........but I have something to add.
I don't think my advice was anything else but common sense on that post.
Nothing complex about it.
My remarks to Cali wasn't needed.
If there is something I don't know...of course I wont post advice on it.
I do see other posts that are made with no knowledge...but I ignore them & post right after it & still try to guide the person to the right track. I definitely still have a lot to learn....but I did do my homework..
Since being a member (almost a year), I found this place to be extremely helpful & most of all friendly. Never had an issue with anyone & have met alot of cool people.
Being sarcastic in a funny way is cool....but when it's a majority of a persons post.....it isn't needed.
I'm sarcastic as well....it's in my nature.
Alot of new members are joining & the same questions are going to be asked.
It's a public forum that has always been to be cool. No need to make it look bad.
I just don't see the need to be sarcastic or look down on others for not knowing as much as the next guy.
Everyone has their own experiences & advice & some will not agree. It's life....
I also feel if some-one has a problem with certain remarks or posts.....call out the person.
That's just me though.

I apologize if I made MR look bad.

MR still rules.:smokin:

Thanks D...

The only other thing I can add is that:
When a person makes intentional sarcastic remarks....it can be a reflection to ones personality.
Remember, this is a site that we are reading. It's not like having the person in front of you, where you can judge a persons character.
It can make some-one look snobby or having an ego, which may not be the case.
The same as curbing foul language and the offensive remarks, people should be respectful on what they post.........no matter how off the wall comments are. Be the better man.
Smart remarks will lead to smart remarks in return....& words will lead to "I'll get the last word." It's nature.
To me........talking directly with the person you have a debate / problem with would work better than posting your beef on decent threads...where the whole post gets ruined.
PM feature is just a click away.
There will always be conflicting advice, different experiences & ones knowledge.
There's a way to say it in a public forum.
It is also very easy just to ignore the post.

I will close my comments with:
instead of getting pissed off & posting offensive comments or feeling like that's how they would understand it...........show the same patience most recommend for being in this hobby.

I really think people are taking this stuff too serious in this forum. I joined this site to learn and meet people that were helpful and participate in good educational conversation, not to be in a forum that makes me feel like someone is talking down to me whether there right or wrong, remember no one is getting paid here. I feel people should be helping each other out of good will, the time we spend in this forum is on our personal time looking to learn and joke and get to know each other. I feel I?ve met people here I can ask for personal help, whether it's to move a sofa or whatever, just the same that I would be willing to help anyone else. The point here is that were all in this together, let a newbie say what he has to say, let him gain confidence, if he is giving wrong advice, lets correct him and let him learn from his mistake. I'm sure no one here gives advice to mislead anyone on purpose. Who's to say who has enough experience to be the chosen to give advice? Let?s get it back to were it was and let?s have fun.

Opinions are like anuses everyone has one, and they all stink!! We are all amateurs for the most part(unless anyone is a bonafide Marine Biologist you fall into this category.)

Realize that every opinion or theory in this HOBBY is subject to a counter opinion/theory! If something works for me and not for you, then I guess that means that it works for me and not for you!!!!! As long as your tank isn't a graveyard of fish and coral then there may be some validity to your methods and if someone shares something that works for them I think that is great. If someone else doesn't like it OH WELL!!!!!!!! This is just my stinky opinion and I'm stickin to it. Lets all get along and share and help eachother. You know the best part about this site? The People, and in a month of being here I actually value your stinky opinions I hope you can value mine!
