Today is a beautiful day for collecting. There are no tropical fish yet this time of the year in NY but I go for grass shrimp, worms, snails and most of all amphipods. Those things are all over the place, especially on my anchor line. When I pull the anchor, they jump all over the boat.
I still have a breeding population in my tank from years past but I like to refresh the supply every year. Of course I also collect bacteria from the mud but I think that is just me who does that.
I don't usually dress as nice as this unless I am looking for shrimp with "class"

When do the mysids come in?

I don't know about mysis but amphipods and grass shrimp are always there. If I go there this weekend I will check it out.
The tropicals are on the south shore and not this time of the year. We never see them in the western Sound.
I will look at the tide charts and try to put together a collecting trip.
I did one with Manhattan Reefs people and there is an article about it on here somewhere with pictures. It was in Reefs Magazine about 2 years ago.

Reefs4Life I take my boat to New Rochelle almost every friday, or we did until the restaurant we used to go to closed a few weeks ago. It was the only one I knew of there with a dock. I forgot the name of it but it was called the Marina Restaurant and it was right across the small inlet from the Glen Island Casino. Do you know the place? I am trying to find out if it will re open soon.

I am looking into a day to go collecting, it depends on the tide, it must be low tide.
Or if anyone wants to take their wife or girlfriend on a moonlight cruise I can do that also, but only during the week. I know, most people work, I used to do that also.
UUUUUUGGGGG, stupid waste of 40 years.
Plenty of grass shrimp around the boat.

We have trumpetfish, coronetfish, Big eyes, butterflyfish, lionfish (although I never saw one here) lookdowns, filefish, boxfish, burrfish and puffers.
We also have local seahorses and pipefish.

If you want to go collecting here and now all we will get is grass shrimp, amphipods seaweeds, snails, tiny rock anemones, starfish, horseshoe crabs (But I don't take them) hermit crabs (I also don't take them) and thats about it.
My boat is in Port Washington in a marina and the collection place is about a mile away.
If you can come up with about 4 people we can go.
I have a dinghy to get to the tide pools but no tropical fish. They are on the south shore in the late summer.

Local stuff

I know I have seen a ton of pipefish around here, mainly at Hudson park where I used to lifeguard at right by the New Rochelle marina. I have never seen seahorses though. That puffer looking fish is so cool, most likely not reef safe but very nice looking. And yeah I could probably come up with 4 people so that shouldn't be an issue. Would we be able to go late summer to look for some tropical fish

Do you keep everything you collect at a lower temperature than reef tanks?

I remember the last time we went - we had a ball. I think it was you, me Tobin, Boozeman, Wingo & Josh if I'm not mistaken.
