if the reefs around the worlds oceans died off like the dinosaurs! would you be willing to be part of the re-population effort by giving up the precious reef in your home ????? think about it! are you prepared to make your mark in the conservation attempt across the world??

what would you do??:fish::goldfish2

If we could stabilize the oceans back to where corals could be reintroduced without fear of killing them again... then we wouldn't be in the situation of losing them in the first place. If it was actually possible to recolonize, than without a doubt I think most people would offer specimens. There are so many other aspects to consider about reintroduction of captive species to the wild that it probably wouldn't be feasible.

Not to be a killjoy, but that's the reality.

I think it will never come to that point. The world has ways of fixing its self , all the werd weather is not from global warming it the earth healing its self and recovering. Yes reef conditions are changeing but in time things will evolve to the changes this is evolution.

Exactly not to mention I really dont think anyone would give up their whole tank for "mother nature" With all the thousands of hours and dollars we put into these tanks I really doubt ANYONE would just say ok here's all the stuff in my tank let's put it in the ocean and hope it lives.

I for one sure as hell wouldn't! As a matter of fact we'd probably be better off keeping them out of the ocean and in our own tanks for preservation. I think more Aquaculture facilities would be started up or at least add to the ones we currently have. I'm sure Aquariums would house a lot more corals as well so people would be able to see them.

If all the worlds reefs died off why would anyone think that adding coral from our captive systems into the same failing conditions in the wild would be successful to repopulating nature's reefs? If the conditions changed enough to support coral in the wild then I'd be the first in line to help.....but the whole theory behind this hypothetical scenario is illogical because if the conditions changed in nature to being able to support coral again, then nature would provide its own inhabitants.

Again, I'd help, but it wouldn't be necessary. Sorry to shoot down your 'ethics thread'.

Our planet that we take for granted does have a remarkable way of healing it self and before all the planets coral reefs and precious wild life gets to a point of extinction the planet itself will get rid of the main cause that led to that point ...us humans!!!!

+1 I agree

If the reefs die, they'll die because the conditions for them are no longer right. We can't just turn the temperature down on the sun, ya know? The animals and corals from our tanks will not necessarily have the skills or correct defense mechanisms to protect themselves from larger predators. Long story short, it's not as easy as just replacing what has been lost.
