Just have to vent:

I've noticed that people register & sign in just to post items for sale, using MR as a classified ad.
Not to be a copy-cat or anything:
but I do like the idea of having a set number of postings before members are able to take advantage of the "for sale/for trade" forum.
It'll be cool if people join in on discussions & be part of the community, before having the right to use MR as a platform to sell items.

I would hate to see MR loose it's "touch" & have it fall off, looking like a CraigsList (as Kasei recently stated).

I disagree with this.

First of all, there really isn't a reason that MR can't be both a hobbyist site and a good place for people to sell their systems, livestock, etc. We just need to make sure that they don't overlap and that people have a way to opt out of seeing stuff they don't want to see.

Also, the ability for someone to come in and sell their tank without previous posting is a good thing IMO. I would rather the users here have first crack at buying cheap used equipment than for it to be listed on craigslist with all the other crap. This is a targeted and captive audience and I think it is beneficial for people to be able to exit the hobby by selling their items to the MR members.

There are a LOT of people out there with tanks who have never seen this site, if they decide to sell it on here without being an active member of the hobby, so be it. It benefits US when people unload stuff at a good price just to be done with it. Its too bad that the hobby is as transitory as it is, but that seems to be a fact of life with owning an aquarium and this site can only help slow down the natural churn by educating people and helping them get to know other hobbyists.

The vendor issues will be resolved soon, these concerns are not being ignored.

I guess I kinda agree with you as well Josh.
There is always 2 sides for every story;)

You're probably right that we might be able to get a great deal from a person who wants to shut down a set-up.
We also might be able to give a better environment to live-stock, for newbs that got in over their head with a set-up......
but how often does this happen?

What I have noticed is members from other sites using MR to unload stuff & that's it.

What can I say........I'm used to the older days.:happysad:

I suppose seeing non reef related items for sale, kinda threw everything off for me .
It's not really something I want to see, when I come to this site.

I'd rather see the site promoted for valuable information members can give, than just the "for sale" forum.

It was a spur of the moment feeling & I vented.
I feel better now......

Sean, I just upload my vid to Photobucket.com and then hyperlinked it. I didn't even want to start using MR bandwidth unnecessarily. Works great. I'm assuming my vid is the one that prompted your comment.

I would like it if when you clicked on a topic (say this thread) you would be brought to the latest post instead of the beginning of the entire thread.

When I update the homepage and click on a thread that I just looked at, but has a new response, I still have to start at page one and then click on the latest page (not that big of a deal, but since I refresh the hompage every 5 mins at work it gets annoying...)

i noticed a few bugs a few weeks ago, dunno it could have been my browser. but:

the nudibar box on mainpage wouldnt work occasionlly- sometimes i couldn't access a thread, and when i clicked on it, some1's profile came up, usually the one who created the thread.

ONe thing i like, and not that we should copy RC- but a seperate homepage for the site and then you have to click on a link to the forms to view. The home page could have all your stickys on it, perhaps people will be more willing to read and do research if its the first thing they see.

I use this feature exclusively. It had been "broken" for awhile, but seems to be functioning now.

Press the

icon before the thread title.

I think this depends on the browser, some of them don't handle the code well. The same thing happens to me in safari, but not in firefox or camino.

that happens to me every so often - i click on a topic and it opens the persons profile in a separate window - but still goes to the topic in the main window. This just started happening a couple of weeks ago.

I believe that happens because each user id has code built in so it will bring up the profile when clicking directly on that user id. It happens to me some times when I am lazy about clicking directly on the thread title. :)
