I've noticed that people register & sign in just to post items for sale, using MR as a classified ad.
Not to be a copy-cat or anything:
but I do like the idea of having a set number of postings before members are able to take advantage of the "for sale/for trade" forum.
It'll be cool if people join in on discussions & be part of the community, before having the right to use MR as a platform to sell items.
I would hate to see MR loose it's "touch" & have it fall off, looking like a CraigsList (as Kasei recently stated).
I disagree with this.
First of all, there really isn't a reason that MR can't be both a hobbyist site and a good place for people to sell their systems, livestock, etc. We just need to make sure that they don't overlap and that people have a way to opt out of seeing stuff they don't want to see.
Also, the ability for someone to come in and sell their tank without previous posting is a good thing IMO. I would rather the users here have first crack at buying cheap used equipment than for it to be listed on craigslist with all the other crap. This is a targeted and captive audience and I think it is beneficial for people to be able to exit the hobby by selling their items to the MR members.
There are a LOT of people out there with tanks who have never seen this site, if they decide to sell it on here without being an active member of the hobby, so be it. It benefits US when people unload stuff at a good price just to be done with it. Its too bad that the hobby is as transitory as it is, but that seems to be a fact of life with owning an aquarium and this site can only help slow down the natural churn by educating people and helping them get to know other hobbyists.
The vendor issues will be resolved soon, these concerns are not being ignored.
