I don't think that you can. I would be very careful. I know that importers need special permits and stuff to get them in. It might not be seomthing that you can put in a carry on. Plus you would have to pack it in your checked luggage..

Def something that you should research first, since it could be "smuggling"

Dude make sure you check. If not you can run the risk of serving time or soemthing. Just imagine you bring back something real nice and you get stopped check and turns out its very rare coral thats protected or something from a protected reef. Boom see you in a few months pal.... lol or they will just take it form you and it will die somewhere in an office.

Just make sure you are well informed of what you can and cannot bring. It will suck big time if you unknowingly break another countries law.

I am no authority on this, but this is how I guess it could be done. Since you are importing species across international boundaries, and since it is international trade, my guess is that you would need a CITES permit. If these are legal animals, and, if they are corals, they may have to be captive bred, you would need the permit to show that they are approved for export. You may also need some sort of certificate to show that the specimens are healthy and not carrying any sort of pathogen. You may also have to find a way of making sure that they are quarantined on arrival. This is all speculation on my part, as I am comparing this with the importation of plants. Regardless, I think you would end up incurring so much more expense, and possibly extra time, that I doubt it would be worth it in the long run.

I've never delt with a european import and here in NY we're at least the second point of contact so we don't normally deal with this. I would contact Fish and Wildlife since they are the ones usually dealing with the illegal import cases I've seen. I'm pretty sure they would know how to go about it and if they don't they will definitely know who to contact. I don't see it being outright illegal but you might find the hoops and permits necessary would be far more of a pain and cost than the frag you want to ship back.
