Converting Sump to Frag Tank

Right now in the middle section of my sump (~16x16x16) I have some tonga branch and chaeto. I was thinking maybe I could use this as a frag tank. What are the pros and cons of doing this and what would I need to do for the conversion? The rocks can come out as I have more then enough in the other tanks. Is there a way, perhaps with egg crate, to section of the chaeto?

On a side note my rock in the main display is very dense and I don't think would be clipped/broken off for fragging very easily. Are there alternative methods like placing temporary plugs next to corals for them to grow on to and then be transplanted?

You'll have heat issues in the summer and you will need to add some flow in there to keep stuff from settling. Your skimmer and sides will start to grow algea all over. And it's a pitta to bend down to check those frags. Other than that it's good....lol!

I am confused why would I have additional heat issues? Also what would settle would there be stuff coming off the corals? Pardon my ignorance just trying to figure this out.

heat from your light, trapped inside your sump. Stuff will settle, and you will need more water movement in the sump. you'll probably need to add a circulation pump.

I've seen this on a couple of tanks and was thinking about how to incorperate it into a new sump design.

So, I know it is possible. Other than having a tiny power head, I didn't see them doing anything differently.

Remove the door for proper ventilation, add fan. It's doable. Check out moidol.

i given this few thought few time and even tho its seems doable it a pita at least in my system one that were all my chemicals go so the thoses levels go up and down till my system make it turn around/plus when i do water canges the level drop temp change a little along with a steady blast of new water and new gfo/carbon i just dont know how well any frags would hold up plus then i would have change my sump light from the one i grow macro with to reef lights for all of this its just seems easier to put a frag tank/frag system ...cmantis stop ur blood cloth renegading and dont be cheap just put up a frag tank i know u got the bread
