Good question. I was wondering the same. I have my heater set at 79. This pass weekend was really hot and I ran the AC all day long. I also had two fans, running (sump/tank) which does a really good job.
I didn't think about the heater until I noticed the light was ON!
I was pleasantly surprised the tank had cooled down because it was hovering around 81 for most of the day.
I know it seems like a waste to cool the water down and then having to re-heat. But for now I feel more comfortable doing this.
I have a controller but haven't installed it as yet. I have some ideas how I can connect the fans and heater and set limits for on/off.

In this hobby you have the things you 'CAN' do and things you 'SHOULD' do.

You CAN take your heater out or unplug it. But why? The glass doesnt break down, it doesnt use electricity. Why would you remove/unplug it? What is the point? You are hurting for 1x5" of space in the summer?

You SHOULD leave it plugged in in case (as above users stated) the temp swings for ANY REASON. Im assuming you guys have owned a tank for awhile? You ever have some crazy thing happen that shouldnt have happened, but it did? Im guessing yes x20. Sure your house 'is always X degrees' and 'oh I dont have a chiller' and to the guy that doesnt use a temp controller, youre screwed either way - but things happen and what does it cost you to leave the heater AS IS in your tank?

Nothing.

before having the apex I just unplugged it but left it in the water.

Now that I have the apex, it's plugged in and will only come on if the tank gets down to 74 deg. My apt hasnt dipped below 79 in 1.5 months now???

So, it's all good.
