WTF!? and they say we the hobbyists are destroying the natural reef, those bombs did worst than all the pieces we took out of the aussie waters in 10 years.

I guess the aussie coral prices just went skyrocket, and all those fishes that can only be caught in those waters (if there are any left that is). Just sad.

500 hundred pound bombs dropped from who knows how many thousands of feet hitting a sensitive coral reef is not fine. sorry i see your point it could be worse but far from fine.

Well I meant its an impact trauma that the reef could recover from. No explosion. Non nuclear. It's not an oil spill. Of all incidents, I feel this isn't that bad.

They dropped them into the deepest part which is 197 ft deep in a channel absorbing some of the kinetic force.

Hopefully the bombs dont leak anything toxic to the reef before the bombs are recovered by the navy.

Anyone else actually read the article or is it just the headline followed by speculation?

500lb bombs are small. They would have to be since the harrier is one of the smallest fighter jets in use. Here is a pic for reference:

They didn't go off and they were dropped over a deep channel to avoid damaging the reef. These aren't atomic either so there won't be any "radiation or whatever". Boats in the area do far more damage than these will by the time they get them out.

Relax folks. These bombs are only 9ft long. Not big enough to cause any harm to a 1200 mile long reef. They were dropped in deep water. No serious physical impact at the bottom. They will not explode. Two are inert, (dummy bombs), and two were unarmed. No danger. They also do not contain anything that will endanger the reef. 2 are essentially hunks of metal with a guidance system, and the other two were unarmed, and cannot explode. They will be fished out by the Navy. I worked with th ese weapons in the military. NO DANGER.

This thread is fantastic! It should be an example as to how clueless (some) people on this site are when giving advice/opinions.

duhhh.....i don't know about you but i'm not buying any aussie corals or fish from now on, they can be carrying radiation into my tank and give my livestock cancer.....but it might give them corals that "nucular glow" like when they are under the actinics. no need for full spectrum leds.....lol.
