I don't have a a good answer for you. I was serious that you have an interesting theory. I'm curious what some of the other well developed LED lit SPS reefs do husbandry-wise. Kres care to chime in? Sunny? Sanjay is switching over to Radions, so that will be interesting to see how corals respond in his tank under his care.

Kres and I were discussing this today. He has a hanna colorimeter coming in soon. If his po4 tests very low I am effen confused :)

I'm thinking Rich is on to something...my system is 7years 0ld and i highly doubt it's low nutrient even do I try to keep it low nutrient but still get the occasional cyano outbreak and GHA but sps colors look great... And I cook them with 6 sol/Vegas six inches above water line with all the colors at 95 percent for at least 3hrs peak times
While other people with fairly new system at these percentages bleach their sps
So it's a good theory

cant wait to keep reading and see some more opinions and maybe even a conscientious. i run LEDs i seem to have very good PE, i am not a great husband and cant really comment on growth as i have not been doing SPS for a long time. i will try to log my results and be a little more helpful for everyone out there.

So first ppl say phosphates inhibit calcification and therefore are bad, now apparently we need phosphates to have better growth and colors? Confusing theories

Basically a little bit is needed, but not too much.

Most recommend around 0.02ppm. After that it is just algae growth, and according to that article by Randy Holmes-Farley, above 0.19ppm you get a huge reduction in calcification.

ps: Randy thank you for the information, looks pretty seamless in your case! Indeed Sanjay going the LED route should provide great information.

Take my theory, write it on a piece of toilet paper, and then wipe your butt with it. Kres has low po4. :D I don't know. This hobby confuses me sometimes.

Kres, how low are your PO4?

You were mentioning problems with using the egg. An easy way to make sure you dump all the chemical is to use Hannah's trick: cut two sides of the reagent pocket with scissors, and make some kind of "cone". Reliability much improved that way.

(also make sure to wipe any fingerprints off the test tube before putting it inside the egg, obviously)

All that's been done ..the egg just isn't consistent no matter what you do

I tried 3 different brands of LEDs, went with AI Sols, Radions Nad razors. I currently run MH and T5's and couldn't be happier. The difference in growth and color took about 3 months to notice but it's noticeable. By the OP you can get a MH T5 combo fixture tat will sit on top,of your tank. I run the Marineland Pro with 2x150 MH Phoenix bulbs and 4 ATI T5's.

The problem with po4 test kits is we only test for inorganic.
Algae uses inorganic but both organic and inorganic are important.

The conversion from inorganic to organic is done by algae. Then organic to inorganic is bacteria and pods. So both end up important as the conversion between both is going on all the time back and forth.

Organic testing is a process and time consuming as well as costly.

Phosphate kits are more of a ball park test to see if your seeing overly high inorganic phosphates. Basically a warning you are ripe for algae to appear. Otherwise its not really useful at all.

Someday we will have a far better cost effective hobbyist kit but I don't think its any time soon.
