"Scientists were stunned in 2001 with the discovery of evidence that the lionfish, whatever their origin, were spawning in the Atlantic. That discovery came when Mr. Gardner, then a graduate student on a field trip, found a tiny lionfish clinging to a dock piling in the Great South Bay by Fire Island."

Oh..I actually put that one there. My bad.

Shame on you Dean. Being so selective with your quotes. :scratchch

This is also from the same article:

For the worried, the good news so far is that all the odd-looking visitors are pale babies and are expected to die off when the cooling sea drops below 50 degrees in the fall. But the fish are voracious eaters, feasting on Long Island?s already diminished shellfish and fin fish as they grow to five inches long during their detour here.

A year ago in the Bahamas, Marsh harbour (to be exact), They were having this discuss. Lionfish inhabiting their waters, this could be diasterous for the ecosystem down their. It is not surprising that they made it up north. These fish are not native to the bahamas but, are now in their waters. Migration and evolution is a bueatiful thing

I believe, It is possible for these creatures to survive in N. Atlantic waters because warmer waters are being brought in through under water currents. Some of these currents go pass eastern LI.
Other factors also come into play
Books I read that support my opinion

The Ocean By Ellen J Prager
The Eternal Darkness By R. D. Ballard
Encyclopedia of the Sea By R. Ellis
Cratures of the Deep By Erich Hoyt

Where is the LIRA catching these butterfly & puffers? I have caught a puffer with a rod before but I have never seen them from just wading around. BTW how is the diving around here? I was waiting for my trip to get certified but now im thinking I should do it now before the water here starts to cool
