Seems like the thread is diverting from the intentions of the thread starter.

To get it back on track, let me say this:
I was once told by a employee of a LFS that, "you can put pretty much any freshwater fish in a saltwater fish tank, they'll just get used to it."

talk about acclimation!
 :sigh:

my boss was notorious for telling all customers that you could use fluvals on saltwater tanks. He sold a friend of mine a 155 bow,not drilled, told him 2 fluvals and 2 hang on filters would be more then enough. a week later sold him 5 fish and some corals with just regular PCs- also told him it was okay to put the 155 on the third floor ... lets just the say the tank started to tilt after a month :-X. I was pretty mad... I use to correct my boss infront of customers because i didn't agree with giving bad advice to ppl who obviously knew no better.

in my last month of so I started to promote MR to customers who wanted real advice and experience from ppl who had no financial needs.

two years ago i was told by a lfs Petco that saltwater is easier maintenance than freshwater. that all i have to do is just have a good filter and i dont need to worry about anything,
if this was true, then my eye would not be twitching from the stress and i would not have any gray hair. LOL.

I was told today that the only way to test copper in an aquarium was to send a water sample to an agency who specializes in that particular test. This was in response to me asking if they sold copper test kits. I almost suffocated I laughed so hard :)

In all fairness, Dom, I've been told by more than one person working in aquaculture or research that hobby copper tests are often not very accurate as many will only measure copper in one form ( dont remember if it was ionic or chelated ).

The things we could say about exotic pets, endless...the guy keeps all corals in tanks lit by PC's with their splash guard covered with salt creep about 18" off the water surface.i don't even think he knows the difference between dying corals and thriving corals, i really don't think he cares. as long as some keep buying he'll keep selling.

back to track- i once witnessed two guys buy over 100 fish and the store employees didn't ask one question, and i know you cant go by appearances but the customer looked like he didn't know his ass from his elbows when it came to keeping fish. he was also wearing a really bad toupee which is a dead give away that he was probably a freshwater noobie posing as saltwater noobie. went something like this:

guy: let me get 30 of these, 20 of those, 8 of those 25 of these....etc
employee:OK
"Wearing a really bad toupee which is a dead give away". I know that this is an old thread but that has to be one of the funniest things i have read on MR.

Not sure if this would be considered the worst LFS advice but... went to a store, had a fish labeled as Sargassum Trigger.

Now this senario falls both on myself and the LFS as far as I am concerned.

I bought this fish. Figured it's colors weren't up to par because of the stress in the LFS--- wouldn't have been the first time I brought a fish home and it changed overnight from being in a different place. Only thing is the next day I realized it was actually a female bluethroat.:duh:

I called the store, they made good on the price difference. I did explain that it was partly my fault as I should have known better... though I do still think that stores should know and accurately identify the items they are selling... especially when the price tag varies greatly from one to another on certain items.

In all things there is a great deal of "buyer beware" "know before you go"-- especially when it comes for caring for a living creature. Most times unless it is an establishment we have grown to trust with good advice overtime we take little to no seriousness in what anyone at an unknown LFS has to say. Thankfully though we've been running in the same circle for about ten years now and it has become much easier overtime.

Though I still make boneheaded decisions from time to time. . :tongue1:
