What is the Coral Database?

This is a free system for keeping track of coral colonies that we are growing locally as a community.

For example?

User A grows a colony from a frag and decides to break it up. After posting a picture in the database, many members become interested in the colony and send private messages asking for a frag. Each member that receives a frag and is able to grow it should go back to the database and click the button ?I have this too!?, which indicates that they have the same species in their tank. (A public list of who owns each coral will be attached to each record in the database in the near future)

If User A ever lost the colony, he or she would be able to go back to the database and find out what other members have the same coral.

Recommendations for using the database
  • Post a well focused identifying photo of the coral as the main picture.
  • Post additional photos if you have them showing the coral in different locations.
  • Write a description of the coral and do your best to explain its history (i.e. I got this from vendor X). It would be helpful if you also explained how the coral has done in your tank, feeding required, lighting recommended, etc?

Do not click the ?I have this too!? button if you do not have the exact coral indicated. There are literally hundreds of different colonies of each species. So not all green montiporas are the same. If you aren?t positive that your colony is the same as the listing already in the database, create a new record by clicking the ?New Coral? button.

We hope that this service is useful for identifying and tracing the different corals that are being grown all around us.

Feel free to post here if you have any questions or suggestions on how we can make this system even better.

i always thought it would be neat to build an actual family tree for all the stuff that gets passed around

Reefer A gets a frag/colony, Reefers B, C, and D gets frags, eventually they frag....etc. would be really neat to see how things are related and pictures to compare growth/color in different tanks. something like this kinda started with the free purple nana frag update thread

if i may...i think that its important that someone should include its difficulty (may be a rating tab josh?) ie; easy to hard to keep, fast grower or slow grower or maybe its hardiness.
Something can people can refer to if purchasing corals or planning what type of tank they want. Too often the new people in the hobby go into a purchase with wide eyes often to realize that the coral is wrong for them, this could be a great reference with pics, discriptions, or family tree (zahner).

I like it alot....

i have a suggestion can you make it like the donor's box. where the avatars move constantly so you're not staring @ the same pics all the time.

one more thing, i think the 'sponsor us' box should be higher in the page. no one sees it all the way @ the bottom.

I agree with the pic size. You can't see it closely, even after you click on it.
I like the difficulty level as well.
Josh, I love what you did with the photogallery. Any chance you can allow some larger photos in there now?

You can attach as many closeup images of the corals to the original post as you'd like. The first image is the "header image" and that is what is displayed to other members when they are browsing.

Difficulty level will be added shortly.

What do you mean by larger photos in the gallery?

I just clicked on an image in the coral database. The follow up is the same small image with a description from a member. I'd like to see something bigger. If I'm doing this wrong, I haven't gotten much better with computers, so tell me what to do and I'll make adjustments. What I see when I click on the pic is nothing short of a "thumbnail".
In the photo gallery, you can upload images, but MR shrinks them down to fit a certain area. Can you make it so the pic can be a little bigger.
for example, I loaded a pic in that was 2560Xsomething. When I uploaded it into MR, it was 600X180.
I'm assuming this has something to do with the amount of room you have on the site... but really, I'm computer illiterate.
Again, you do a great job. This is just what I'd like to see.

What's with some of our abbreviations and acronyms turning blue too? I hate it. I said PC in the "Political Correct" sense of PC. If you click on PC in my posts, it says "Power Compacts". This is Blasphemy. Power compacts shall only be represented in a negative prospective in my posts. You are ruining my good name.

Just a quick update.

We added a feature to filter the coral database by SPS, LPS, and Soft Corals. More filter options are coming soon.

Also, corals are now listed on your profile page, and they will soon include the photos of the coral so you can accurately represent what is in your tank to the rest of the community.

Lots of work is being done with this system, we hope to launch new features here continuously over the next 2 months

Please let me know if you have any ideas or suggestions for how to make this feature even cooler.

So, how many corals do YOU have listed in the database?
