How old is your tank? Are you running a skimmer? What is your bioload? How much do you feed?
If it's a young tank, I wouldn't worry. :) Anyways, you will always have diatoms growing to some extent, that's why you need snails. :D

Ah, who minds a few diatoms anyway? Nothing a little algae magnet can't take care of. (Bicolor blenny!) Turbo snails. If that's the least of your algal problems, you're doing ok, as far as I'm concerned. ;)

Small stuff. Wait til you have to rip apart your tank and eradicate the evildoing valonia!

Poor HD.

fishfanatic, I'm wondering a few things. For instance, is that skimmer properly sized? Have you tried letting the diatom bloom "crash" itself (use up available nutrients, much like lemmings, til it starves itself out)? I am sorry, but I know that you have given many rundowns before, your w/c regimen, parameters, full filtration, source water info, etc., etc., but I'm drawing a blank.

Have you got a refugium set up? If not, maybe it's time to consider it? Do you mess with the system quite a bit? I get the feeling that you're like I was with my first tanks, could NOT keep my hands out.. til I got yelled at by an old-timer. I can't post what he said, but it was essentially to "Keep your hands OUT of the tank!" (Many expletives deleted, though in truth it was most entertaining.)

I'm glad you're not giving up, but let's take things very slowly right now, time may be all this needs.

I think you'll find that most reefers regularly use algae magnets to wipe their diatoms off their glass every couple of days or so.

my best Capn' impression is as follows...

I got thrown out of a bar last night. some guy had the nerve to tell me I couldn't have more than three shot glasses in front of me at any given time.
i told him I would do what i wanted and so he took a swing at me. it landed squarely on my chin and before i could retaliate i was bum rushed and thrown out onto the street.
as I got up to re-enter the place and kick some ass i got hit by a car.

pretty good, eh? :P
