fish- if you do a quick swipe daily, nope. If you let it get nice and green first, then the crusty diatom spots will not come off. The key to clean glass is maintain its cleanliness.

my best Capn' impression is as follows...

I got thrown out of a bar last night. some guy had the nerve to tell me I couldn't have more than three shot glasses in front of me at any given time.
i told him I would do what i wanted and so he took a swing at me. it landed squarely on my chin and before i could retaliate i was bum rushed and thrown out onto the street.
as I got up to re-enter the place and kick some ass i got hit by a car.

pretty good, eh? :P

Hell, not even Capn himself coulda done better!

I really like the floating magnets made by (??) MagnaFloat. You never have to reach in to grab it, and they don't have the nasty habit of rusting like some cheaper models. They are incredibly strong magnets. I use mine on 1-1/2" thick acrylic (It's a 4' deep tank) and it still scrapes off green algae. Diatoms come right off.

I have the same ones, Matt. I think they're called Mag-Float.

Anything that has the slightest connection with magnet always works. This is even 100% true for miraclous device, so it is even more true for a mechanical device like the algae scraper.

Get thisif you want *THE* ultimate algae scraper.

I have the #4 magna whatever. Works fine, although I almost lost a finger in it once. I clean the glass every 2 or 3 days. Here's a great idea, told to me by Rich Durso:

You know the dinky magnets that have a scraper for the inside? The trouble with them is they fall off all the time, but the do remove corraline. You just put your honkin big magnet on the outside, and the dinky scraper on the inside. Magique! Don't know why I never thought of that.

Hey Darrell..Here is my e mail... [email protected]...I also have problems with the diatoms..but if you have good water and nutrient free, it will definitely slow them down...I had to go to Distilled water until i can afford a descent RO/DI unit....I also think its part of the maturing process, i kinda gave up..not letting the tank go to **** by any means, but if you cant beat em, let them kill themselves... :p

8O fishfanatic 2,

it sounds like all of it together will work, the floating magnet, u/v light, and letting it grow it's self to death. on the corners and bottom just take a toothbrush to those hard to reach places!

good luck

Got me some magnets, not Mag-Floats but they do go around corners without falling. They're called Twisters, made by Aquarium Systems, I really like them since I did the whole tank in ten minutes. :D :D :D :D

Normally it takes me an hour!

Diatoms are from excess silicates noramlly found in tap water. They are also added from overfeeding.

To get rid of them watch your overfeeding and replace filters on your RO/DI unit if you have one. You will always have them to a slight extent and the rpovide needed nutrients to and algea eating snails/fish, so dont over stress it.

As far as scraping goes I never liked magnets, I use a kent long handled scraped better for coralline spots.

If anyone has one of the big Mag Floats, and a newer $20 bill, or 10, 50, 100, whatever, the irridescent ink in the bottom right of the front of the bill will respond to the magnet very slightly. I guess it has some type of metal in the ink. Sorry to go off, I thought this was kind of interesting.

I believe that Randy Holmes-Farley put the excess silicate level theory contributing to diatomaceous blooms to rest.
