I know that its a well known fact that hydometer's aren't all that accurate, but I just had to post this. Maybe I should buy another one to compare  What is the electronic device to measure salinity? Thanks.

Take those sum-of-um-iatches, shine them up real nice, turn them sideways, and dropkick them out of a second story window and then run over them repeatidly. I hate them damn swing arms.

Get a "refractometer" and you will never have to worry again. I got a good deal from premium aquatics, I bought the RTS-10 I think is the model number?? Extremly acurate!!

Pinpoint and other have salinity meter, you may want to take a look. I use a high range TDS meter to check salinity.

Most TDS meter in this hobby is for low range (for RO water), and it won't work. See if you can get a meter that work on the range of sea water, around 35000 ppm or 35 ppt.

don't throw those out just yet .. i think i see a use.. it looks as if your DSB is the exact height of your hydrometer.. so you can still use it to make sure your dsb is even all across the tank, or perhaps use it to compare your DSB to the ones at your LFS ... ;-)

I checked mine against a couple of refractometers and got the same amout off. The readings from the swing arms are repeatable just not accurate. Mine was low by a point and a half.

35000 PPM does not seem to equal 35 PPT.....

Depends on your standard, some may have different number for NSW, but AFAIK 1 ppt == 1000 ppm, right :?

Be sure to calibrate your refractometers though. My salinity was farther off when I went several months without recalibrating my refractometer than I was ever off with my hydrometers.

I see, PeeJ. I was using ppt to mean part per thousand.... did not realize that trillion also starts with a "t".
