with the way i have outlined the finished product you could not use a closed loop in the way you are thinking unless it were above the tank and below the lighting.

In that vein, shouldn't we be allowed to create a loop that penetrates from underneath the tank as long as it is only say 6-8" underneath and not down to the floor from a desk? ie- 2 bulkheads thru the bottom witha pump mounted just beaneath the resting surface of the stand?

(Your vote yes or no should settle it, up to you mr. rulemaker)

no. it was late and i wasn;t thinking of all the possibilties.

i just don't want sumps on these things i really don't care about closed loops, they don't significantly up the gollonage.

May I propose a start date of Feb 26th ? That gives everyone a week or so to get those mail orders in and delivered but not a month to get carried away with :D :D

i will second that.

i think everyone can start once we get this definition worked out.

i just wouldn't do anything permanent yet.

each aquarium in it's entirity will be no larger than twenty US gallons.
this is decided by total volume and does not take into account water that has been displaced by sand or water.
baffles and overflows also will not be accounted for.
all aquariums that meet this simple volume constraint will be considered regulation sized. this is true of both manufactured and DIYed aquariums.

Question on the volume Pod, did you mean to say the total would be minus volume "displaced by sand or water"? Did you mean rock in your using it?

In other words, I've got a 29 I can use for what I'm planning. If I figure the rock and sand displace 9 gallons of volume will that be within the limits?

Sorry to bother, math isn't one of my strong suits...

i meant to say rock and have fixed the typo.

so, i am sorry to say that your 29 wouldn't qualify.
i do want participation at a maximum but a 29gallon tank is pretty big to be considered a nano, IMO.

i am open to discussion though.

No problem Pod! I told you I was confused

I read the line "does not take into account water displaced", etc. wrong-I didn't think 29 was nano sized either!

Carry on, you are doing great...((dawg still scheming furiously)))

Would limiting the size to 20g total volume (including hang on refugiums) be a better option? ie- a 10g tank, a 10g sump or a 15g tank and a 2L hang on... that subtotals in total volume less than 20g.

Just a suggestion...

here was my line of thinking... nano's are so small that a skimmer seems like a waste to me.
innacurate as always, i assumed most people would think as i do and thus would not want to bone up for a skimmer when large water changes are so easy to do.
so i am very flexible on this but do not want to open the gate for sumps as they compromise what i consider to be a real nano.

would you be willing to put in a threaded plug for this competition and hook up your sump afterwards?

i considered this last night and decided the way i chose would be a more puritan nano.

adding the sumps in seems to alter my view of what people will build.
along with the sump comes all the thoughts of hardware and electronics.... if we can do this without everyone jumping on that wagon i really don't care how it is defined.

I'm in. I had a 20gal long SPS tank with a 250 halide over it at one point. So I'm automatically the winner. Can't we just cancel this contest before I make people cry?

Good luck.

I doubt I will be much of a competitor but I've got some 10g tanks I might could cook something up in.

That should count for extra points for sure. My SO just shrugged and asked when we were going shopping and what was I planning. God I love that man! He and I walk in the LFS and the owner stops wondering how he going to pay his bills this month
