Thats it?

is this still your spec?
BlueLine70 (Return Pump) = 290 watts x 24 hrs = 6.96 KWH
Tunze Stream 6100 (powerhead) = 45 watts x 24 hrs = 1.08 KWH
Fuge Light = 96 watts x 24 hrs = 2.30 KWH
Actinics = 280 watts x 14 hrs = 3.92 KWH
MH = 1200 watts x 7.5 hrs = 9.00 KWH
Misc (top-off, kalk reactor, phosban reactor, fans, heater, etc) = ~50 watts x 24 hrs = 1.2 KWH

That total watts is 290+45+96+280+1200+50 = 1961 of total watts
1961/1000 kw= 1.961 * 24 hrs = 47.064 x $0.175 e-cost = 8.2362 e-usuage x 365 day= $3006 a year and $250.15 per month.

Is that correct?

no, it is not correct. You added up my total wattage and multiplied it by 24 hrs. I dont run all that 24 hrs (lights are on less). For that reason I first added up my daily usage (24.45KWH [not 47.06]), then multiplied that by 30 (733.8KWH).
At the regular rate that would cost 733.8KWH*$0.175/KWH = $128.42/month. (in my original post I assumed a rate of $0.17/KWH)

Being that i am on the Time-of-Use rate, I calculated my cost during the summer rates (see below) to be $93.25/month. (a savings of $35.17/month on the tank)

Running the Time-of-Use plan (at summer rates Jun-Sept) my cost is as follows:
60 peak hrs/week / 168 hrs/week = 35% peak and 65% off-peak.
peak rate is $0.39/KWH and off peak rate is $0.07/KWH.
Avg rate (for 24hr operation) is ($0.39/KWH x 35%) + ($0.07/KWH x 65%) = $0.1365/KWH + $0.0455/KWH = $0.18/KWH

BL70 = 6.96 KWH/day x 30 days x $0.18/KWH = $37.58
Tunze = 1.08 KWH/day x 30 days x $0.18/KWH = $5.83
Fuge = 2.30 KWH/day x 30 days x $0.18/KWH = $12.42
Actinics = 65 hrs peak / month x .24 KWH x $0.39 = $6.08
Actinics = 355 hrs off-peak / month x .24 KWH x $0.07 = $5.96
MH = 9.00 KWH/day x 30 days x $0.07 = $18.90
Misc = 1.2 KWH/day x 30 days x $0.18/KWH = $6.48
Total = $93.25 / month (oct-may peak rates are much cheaper)

ok, lets compare electrical consumption of our tanks.

i'll start (based on a 24 hour period).

BlueLine70 (Return Pump) = 290 watts x 24 hrs = 6.96 KWH
Tunze Stream 6100 (powerhead) = 45 watts x 24 hrs = 1.08 KWH
Fuge Light = 96 watts x 24 hrs = 2.30 KWH
Actinics = 280 watts x 14 hrs = 3.92 KWH
MH = 1200 watts x 7.5 hrs = 9.00 KWH
Misc (top-off, kalk reactor, phosban reactor, fans, heater, etc) = ~50 watts x 24 hrs = 1.2 KWH

Total = 24.46 KWH/day / 187 gallon display = .13 KWH / gallon / day
(almost $125/month of electric bill @ $0.17/KWH) - I never realized this. Perhaps paying attention to it shows that there is money to be saved on energy effecient equipment.

BL70 = 6.96 KWH/day x 30 days x $0.18/KWH = $37.58
Tunze = 1.08 KWH/day x 30 days x $0.18/KWH = $5.83
Fuge = 2.30 KWH/day x 30 days x $0.18/KWH = $12.42
Actinics = 65 hrs peak / month x .24 KWH x $0.39 = $6.08
Actinics = 355 hrs off-peak / month x .24 KWH x $0.07 = $5.96
MH = 9.00 KWH/day x 30 days x $0.07 = $18.90
Misc = 1.2 KWH/day x 30 days x $0.18/KWH = $6.48
Total = $93.25 / month (oct-may peak rates are much cheaper)
being on this plan saves me $30/month or $360/yr compared to the regular plan - this is just on the aquarium, i also save on other appliances around the house as well.
Ronen, here is the thread with the breakdown of my electrical costs.
(and thanks for coming by tonight, had a great time, but you gave me more work to do)

unlike you i have a wife i must allocate time to, but thanks to you, she now WANTS me to spend time on the tank (rather than the usual "again with your fish tank???!!!"). I played around with the return flow and cleaned the grates on my Stream and overflow box, so my flow now is really a lot better :thanks:
she said the tea didnt come out good (she didnt put enough leaf, but only realized after you left) - we owe you a better one next time!
Also let me know when you are redoing you sump, i'll come by to give you a hand.

how many watts are you using a day on your 90 gal?

habibi, ready for your math lesson?

multiply (thats the little "x" on your calculator) the number of watts by the number of hours they are running in a day. that will give you the total watts you use in a day, and you can compare that to mine (.13KWH/gallon/day).
When you complete your homework, then we can talk.
b'seder?

Update (at current rates)

Daily Consumption (in KWH)
BlueLine70 (Return Pump) = 290 watts x 24 hrs = 6.96 KWH
Tunze Stream 6100 (powerhead) = 45 watts x 24 hrs = 1.08 KWH
Fuge Light = 96 watts x 16 hrs = 1.54 KWH
Actinics = 280 watts x 14 hrs = 3.92 KWH
MH = 1200 watts x 3.5 hrs = 4.20 KWH
Misc (top-off, kalk reactor, phosban reactor, fans, heater, etc) = ~50 watts x 24 hrs = 1.2 KWH

Total = 18.90 KWH/day / 187 gallon display = .10 KWH / gallon / day
(almost $115/month of electric bill @ $0.20/KWH)

Running the Time-of-Use plan my cost is as follows:
Peak rate is $0.30/KWH (10am-10pm M-F) = 60 hrs/week
Off-peak rate is $0.15/KWH = 108 hrs/week
= weekly 35% peak and 65% off-peak.
Avg rate (for 24hr operation) is ($0.30/KWH x 35%) + ($0.15/KWH x 65%) = $0.20/KWH

Monthly Cost:
BL70 = 6.96 KWH/day x 30 days x $0.20/KWH = $41.76
Tunze = 1.08 KWH/day x 30 days x $0.20/KWH = $6.48
Fuge = 360 hrs peak / month x .09 KWH x $0.30 = $9.72
Fuge = 60 hrs off-peak / month x .09 KWH x $0.15 = $0.81
Actinics = 40 hrs peak / month x .28 KWH x $0.30 = $3.36
Actinics = 380 hrs off-peak / month x .28 KWH x $0.15 = $15.96
MH = 4.20 KWH/day x 30 days x $0.15 = $18.90
Misc = 1.2 KWH/day x 30 days x $0.20/KWH = $7.20
Total = $104.19 / month :arg: :sigh1: :banghead:

not really, i just live for the challenge of squeezing yet more uselessness into my existing time.

p.s. anyone with a reef tank must have too much time on their hands, how else how could you explain people spending hours discussing sand?
