Amazons are notoriously beligerent. My friend has one for at least 20 years now, Lucy. I would NEVER think of touching Lucy. I actually walk in a big arc around her cage when I'm there. Well the only two people that Lucy will have any kind of interaction with is my friend and her husband. Lucy bit the hand that feeds her just a few months ago (after 20 years) and bit hard enough to send my friend to the emergency room. The bite went all the way to the bone in her finger.

Their African Grey, Doc, is just like yours, as friendly to everyone as can be.

They also had a Cockatoo that they had to give away. Absolutely beautiful, but made the Amazon look like a pussycat. Just totally unmanageable.

I know you mentioned about your nieces, but remember, taking on the responsibility of a parrot is a life changing commitment. Vacations become tougher, etc. At your nieces ages they can't understand that yet, nor are they legally able to make that decision. What about when they go to college, etc.? My friends had to discuss with the prospective future guardian whether or not they would agree to take Lucy and Doc.

Parrots are super pets, but like you said, many times they outlive their best friends. Then what?

Sorry about the harsh reality of it. It's just a very difficult subject to broach with someone.

Enjoy them, they are beautiful and devoted pets.

Its cool Russ ,I know where you are coming from .
My Nieces wil lbe out of College by then ,Im hoping to live for another 40 yrs at least tht much ,LOL
BUt its true ,they will out live me ,or i that is up to g-d to deside i guess.
Vaction i can only go for a week or so thts it.My younger brother usually stays at my place to help me out ,Sonny my Amazon is cool with ppl aside for a little ear nibbling and a bite every now and then. But he wont let anyone touch him ,No matter what ,he will perch on ppl only(most of time he just uses them to get to me :shhh: ) But they do have an additude From the reading ive done they have a reputation of being nasty from time to time .Heres a another shot of Sonny

Sort of one.

My friends "USED" me in toilet training their dogs too. :meow: I stop helping them that now because my housemate complains about the noise usually associate in the first 2 days of "housing warming"

Wingo, maybe you can gimme some tips on potty training? my male maltese (casper) is a yr old too and he refuses to do it on paper or outside. our girl (wendi) is perfectly trained without any mistakes so i don't see why. the breeder said its cause he's whole (un-neutured) that like cats he wants to leave his "mark" around even with #2. i'm not really a dog person so when it comes to poo i get really mad when there are mistakes. like sometimes right in the middle of the floor (thank g-d we hav wd flrs). i want to cage him up but will listen to tips first.

i had amazons but they were all too noisy. i think maybe we should get a parrot soon because of the "longetivity" factor but will only limit it to one species because its the quietest (blue head pionus) and because greys are just so popular/common already. birds normally drive me crazy between the noise and dander.

its a smart idea to separate all the males and females in your zebras and your hamsters. unless u r sure u can find homes beforehand? besides the females would be much happier, they get overbred and beat up on and exhausted until totally plucked when housed with more than 1 male, right?

just curious, what other animals does everyone else have?

post some pictures so we can see :)

I'll start, this is my one cat coco,

Jon,

Coco is absolutely beautiful! Is Coco 100% Persian?

This thread makes me want to get a dog and cat even more.

I have been thinking about adopting a Maine Coon or some other long haired cat. As for a dog, I was thinking about a larger breed - German Shepard or Saint Bernard or a mix.

Some people have recommended the North Shore Animal League as a place to adopt... does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

I had a King Shepherd puppy for a few weeks before she died. She was part of a litter that was prematurely abandoned by her mother. Her name was Shelby (she was grey with a black mask and saddle like the Shelby GT500 "Eleanor" in Gone in 60 Seconds) because I am a mustang freak. They were all severely under weight and the littermates all dropped one at a time Shelby was the last to go . She was awesome though. Lots of character even at a few months. My girlfriend has a huge (really hyper and stupid) golden retriever that weighs about 110-120. Her dog would bark at Shelby and Shelby would just stare at her until she got close enough and then swat my GFs dog right on the muzzle. She never cried or anything unless I walked away from her and then it was just a sort of growl really. Anyway, my brother has a full grown champion male he's 160ish lbs and has a great personality too. Was never into huge dogs until my brother got his. His dog (named Wyatt after Wyatt Earp because this dog is the law at his size) is the nicest dog in the world unless you do something he sees as threatening lol and his bark is as deep as 2 12" subs going off. Will try to get some pics of Wyatt up he's huge. If anyone was wondering King Shepherds are a sort of new breed they have been around for just 15yrs. It's a mix between some (I think) kind of massive sheep dog and a german shepherd and something else. Looks like if you put 3 german shepherds together into one dog. Police don't use them because they can get overly protective of their person and don't have the stamina of the smaller guys. Plus there would be a lot of lawsuits I'd imagine concerning harm caused by their massive mouths. As the breeder told us, "They don't have the staying power of the smaller dogs but for those first 5 minutes you would not want to be that guy."

coco sure does _look_ like a total persian. maybe even a show persian! nice features, including the copper eyes. my male OEW persian has that "new" persian look (high nose, eyes wide apart) that i _don't_ like, while the queen has the traditional doll face that the show world looks down on nowadays. they have one copper eye and one blue eye, each. well you will see when i get around to posting pics.

hey bill, G is right, CoCo came from a line of show cats, I got her for an ex gf at a store on 62nd st, just cats, she was the bargain "starter" show cat.

I've heard good things about North Shore, I've not been there though.

Maybe someone else can recommend a good place to adopt.
The shelters I've been too always break my heart. I want to take home all the dogs and cats :(
Union square petco also has a charity that places cats. they are a no kill shelter, which is great. But a vet in the city once told me to try and adopt animals from the shelters that have a death penalty for the animals, before you go to a no kill shelter.

Cute dog:) I have been considering getting a beagle but the ones I have seen have that annoying horn sounding bark :D How does Mocha behave?

Beagles barks will drive you insane but thank god mocha does not bark often. As far as behaving she's a bit mouthy but a great dog and extremely smart. Within 2 weeks my girlfriend taught her sit, stay, come, paw, rollover etc. She's now working on when the dog needs to go to the bathroom it rings a bell hanging by the door.

If your serious about getting one PM me when your ready I got her from a breeder in pennsylvania who only breeds show beagles i'll give you his info.

Wow! A show cat! (And a "starter" at that)... I don't think I can go that fancy, but her great features and coat make you understand why show animals can be special.

As far as the shelters are concerned, I have heard that some places have more animals with "health" issues than others... This might be some sort of shelter urban legend, but North Shore has received pretty good reviews from various friends of mine that have adopted pets (while they have told stories of repeated visits to the vet from friends that adopted from various other shelters).

I would suspect that the health of each individual animal probably isn't completely affected by the shelter it stays at, but there probably is something to be said about a healthy and well-kept environment.

Any thoughts?

yes i agree, I've heard some scary things, I would say North Shore is a well run, clean and healthy shelter with a good rep.

OK, one at a time.

This guy never stop moving and fast too. Take me more than 20 shots before I can get one that is somewhat Ok to see him clearly.
He likes to follow wherever you move as a way of having fun. He only eats pellets. He careless of ALL my DIY food-krills, seaweed, duckweed....... Spoil brat. The former owner must have spoil him. :joke: Actually, pellets may be more balanced food for him anyway.

You know what camera I used from the reflection-haha My new pet Panasonic FZ7S. I love it. The only electronic pcs that I do not regret about buying it. TV, DVD, Camcorder, monitors....back to flat TV... DVD, none of those make me happy more than a month. SOunds like I am the the spoil brat.
