Amazons are notoriously beligerent. My friend has one for at least 20 years now, Lucy. I would NEVER think of touching Lucy. I actually walk in a big arc around her cage when I'm there. Well the only two people that Lucy will have any kind of interaction with is my friend and her husband. Lucy bit the hand that feeds her just a few months ago (after 20 years) and bit hard enough to send my friend to the emergency room. The bite went all the way to the bone in her finger.
Their African Grey, Doc, is just like yours, as friendly to everyone as can be.
They also had a Cock
atoo that they had to give away. Absolutely beautiful, but made the Amazon look like a pussycat. Just totally unmanageable.
I know you mentioned about your nieces, but remember, taking on the responsibility of a parrot is a life changing commitment. Vacations become tougher, etc. At your nieces ages they can't understand that yet, nor are they legally able to make that decision. What about when they go to college, etc.? My friends had to discuss with the prospective future guardian whether or not they would agree to take Lucy and Doc.
Parrots are super pets, but like you said, many times they outlive their best friends. Then what?
Sorry about the harsh reality of it. It's just a very difficult subject to broach with someone.
Enjoy them, they are beautiful and devoted pets.
