albert after this week i wanna bring over my skimmer to test on your tank, it consumes 38 watts and super quiet. i wanna test the skimmer because it's a super cheap skimmer. cost at 180 right now

Albert, do you see any differences in your reef yet?
slight bleaching (as you were correct to warn me, thanks!) who knows what would have been if you didnt remind me to decrease the photoperiod. i just raised it back yesterday.
also, the water is less yellow/green (as can be seen when looking down a test tube)

he he, i dont think i noticed much of a difference in performance, still getting about 125mL of skimmate per day. I will have to keep an eye out for any differences.
I will try to get around to posting more pics (to prove it is still working)

So what your saying is that we have a baller:eek:

Yeah, but didn't you have a leaky cup which impaired efficient skimming? Now I am hoping to see some heavier skimmate, rather than the watered down less filling pics that we saw earlier.

Man, I am gonna have to learn you guys....pics coming soon.

I was about to purchase that skimmer & the last minute decided to wait & hear from others. In particular I wanted to hear back from Alrha. It would replace my Deltec (I know) due to noise levels in my apt, but I wanted to make sure it was at least partially as good.

When I first installed my Deltec I was getting 1/2-1 cup /day of really heavy, dark & nasty skimmate. Then when I added sand to my sump that number dropped. It then dropped again after I added a prefilter (sponge, carbon, & phosban) to the water entering the sump from the main tank.
Nonetheless, this is my skimmate from 2 days:

Amount is not a fair comparison when compared to the Tunze, so here is a watered down version of the same skimmate. This 2nd pic looks more like what the Tunze produces. If this is true, then I don't think the 9015 is worth it (at least when compared to my Deltec & noise factors).

fastuno,
just because the 9015 looks watered down to you doesnt mean its not worth it. I'd argue the skimmate looks a little closer to your first pic, but either way theres nothing wrong with skimming wet. It gets the gunk out faster you just have to make sure to keep your salinity levels in check. I'm getting the 9010 next week (finally!!!!) because its better at wet skimming.

skimmate production is a poor way of comparing quality of the skimmers since we all have different bioloads in our tanks. Bubble concentration is a much better way to compare quality. Big bubbles = your skimmer sucks, tiny bubbles = your skimmer rocks ;D Anyhow this is all good stuf for the skimmer thread. You guys should post pics and opinions over there if you get a chance.

i was thining the same thing. I feed maybe a cube's worth of food per day while someone else may be feeding twice as much.

perhaps the only way to compare skimmers is for someone to do an official test/experiment like people do with salts and lights - setting up equivalent tanks and running them, or running a bunch of skimmers on the same tank and see which performs best.

That would be the true test. We need someone with a large sump/system and people to lend their skimmers for a few days (which will be the hard part)

perhaps people with skimmers for sale, or just sitting around (not used) might lend their skimmers to such a cause.

but we also need an experienced tester that would be able to set them all up properly.

Dudes, I am game for a test. I would lend out my Deltec for this good cause.
You guys just reminded me! I have not been feeding any F1 or F2 & have been washing all of my Mysis cubes before they enter the tank lately, hence less skimmate production now.

I don't believe in all that wet skimming hoopla! I think this all depends on the AMOUNT of skimmate you produce. My crude example above was just to demonstrate that Alrha's
125ml/day skimmate production may not be comparable to my 50ml of much darker skimmate production. Wet skimming means that the skimmate contains more of your tank?s water. So, all one need do is to water down your dry skimmate to get a GENERAL feel for how it compares had it been a wet skim. Yes, I admit I went a little over on the wetting to exaggerate my point, but lets say I only filled it up to 1 ? cup. Still a bigger yield than with the 125ml/day.

I am sure we all know how unscientific & biased this all is, not to mention the many factors that would come into play in a true skimmer comparison test.

I just might buy the Tunze 9015 & pin it against my Deltec. Just wondering if there is anyone out there who would be willing to buy it from me for $400 if I deem my Deltec better?
