was the water ever tested? If so, let see the results. Also just curious but how much sand do you have in your tank? you can buy premade salt water... it shouldnt be an issue. Also what test kits are you using and how old are they? How many fish did you have and what size?

what test kits are you using? Also check nitrite. What equipment are you running and do you have carbon in there? What kind of fish did you have and how big were they? Do you have a cleaning lady who possibly sprayed some kind of cleaning solution around the tank?

I had a similar problem. Still not exactly sure what it was. I did noticed tiny asterinas stuck to them. Some say they kill corals, other say they are harmless. I had to manually removed them. Thank goodness i have a small tank.

Matt, I am so sorry this happened to your tank. Wish there was something I could do to help you feel better.:( Hope by now you have been able to figure out what happened, and are on the way back to an even better looking tank.;)

I think the tailspot is a casualty, not the cause, as you say it has all the fins and such that looks like it just died. If it just died the ammonia level in your tank is not caused by it. It's your nitrifying bacteria that are dying and thus cannot decompose the ammonia.

matt, i've got a couple things i could pass on as well. but it sounds like you've got things under control.

you can't remember any changes whatsoever? could your dogs have gotten into the sump area or something? to me it sounds like you had something that died and it sparked a cycle. could have been a larger hitchhiker you didn't know about - bobbit worm or something. did you stir the sand bed at all? and +1 on the cleaning solution/airspray. Be careful with aerosols around the tank - I've got a no-air-freshener rule in the tank room. which means i just have to be extra careful not to stink that room up, lol.

Dogs cannot get access to anything in my tank (of the cat for that matter). No aerosal sprays are used near the tank. Certainly could of been a death that sparked it so we will see. I will see how it looks when i get home from work tonight and go from there.
