edison good invention is 1 percent insperation 99 persent persperation

josh thats exactly what freind said when i turned off my skimmer.what do you think they did before robert waringtons tests to develope his balanced aquarium system.people just killed fish and inverts.didn,t you ever wonder (what if)the traditional halon lighting is the simplest way to go--ben there, don that.as you know some corals like chili pepper coals are non photo other in my experiance like montipora capricornis and mushrooms apore strrong light.i have already ordered two limestone blocks to act as poor imitations of the barrier reefs my corals will go on top of these14 inch walls.three inches from the top and vary close to the fluresent lights.will it work?don,t know now but i will be able to tell you next year.if you don,t try you don,t learn

my apologies folks,i guess you don,t agree with what im going to do--ok,different strokes---i just want to test the limits. from an earlier tank i i know that i don,t need to run the reef, mother nature can do a better job then i can. i know i don,t need sewage pumps(wet dries) skimmers etc,now i want to test the limits on lighting.i can,t tell what those limits are yet--but i will find out.
The thing is people say they are here to learn more about reefing etc.but tell us about what they have been doing or thinking about doing and expect the whole community should drop what they have been doing and welcome it with open arms. For example, you can have a reef in a Flower Vase or a FOWLR tank without a mechanical filter. There was a LFS that had a healthy 10 gal reef with fish and a small light ,power head for many, many years.Everyone can not keep such setups succesfully for many different reasons .That doesn't mean it can't be done.
Referring to your salesman pitch comment:-Without certain equipment some people would be limited to sponges ,mushrooms and algae growth. For example Heaters,Chillers,Power Heads ,Timers ,Lighting ,ATO are essential for some tanks bottom line. That's why we can keep animals that were considered impossible to keep and why we have communities like this one and even the salesman have to eat.Good luck with your endeavors.

There is a section called tank threads. It's in the drop down next to the home button on the home page.
Just click new thread and start.
You can upload pics and people can comment.
People on this site like to see pics as the project progresses and most will agree that you cannot take enough.

I've been on this site for little more than a year with about 3+ years in the hobby. Still haven't started a thread. Waiting for my next upgrade.
I have logged over two weeks total on SCUBA and much more time freediving so I am fortunate enough to know the real thing.

test the limits

imbarrie,i never ment to infer anyone should do what i do.but i want to teast the limits in my tank.who said we have to stack rubble from the ocean(live rock)then put corals on it to hide the ugly things.mr lee chi ing said to use live rock, but not how much to use,the sailsmen said 1.5 lbs per gallon.let me just test that.

really thanks for the advise.i am well aware of mr lees work,i read it in 1961.i follow robert warington balanced aquarium more.he developed it in 1849,published in1850 or anna thyms, who in 1846 kepy corals and seaweeds alive for three yrs.i do use jubards deep bed,and by placeing low light corals on top of my stylized barrier reef they will be three inches from the florenent bulbs.exactly as they are growing in nature.minus the flur. bulbs of cource

josh, you keep a reeftank becuse of the pioneering work of robert warington.he killed many fish and inverts developing it.if you want to save fish and inverts leave them in the ocean-take up photography or stamps.

I do what I think provides as normal an environment as possible for my livestock.
You don't seem to see this as a time tested Darwinian evolutionary process. A majority of what thrives in our tanks did not with the techniques used a decade ago. Much of that is in harvesting and transport but a lot has to do with equipment.
When I had a FOWLR in 1990 undergravel filters and trickle filters were huge and skimmers were emerging. This has evolved into what we do today out of the survival of best practices not what can be sold to a gullible consumer.

how i don,t run a rref

imbarrie,i donot run my reeftanks, mother nature does.she has had 4.3 billoin yrs of treil and error to leard how to run a small tidal pool or the pacific ocean.my 60 odd yrs is nothing compared to that.so i let the expert run my reeftanks.i am just the enabler,i add water, trace elements, and buffers then let the lady do the rest.as the pagans said from her we sprang, she sustains us and when we die we go back into her arms

I had the same mentality over 15 years ago when i started a reef tank. I have no pictures to show, but it doesn't work well...You can adjust the type of animals to the type of equipment but most of us here would rather have the equipment that would support more without limitations.

With bright flourescent lights, you can probably keep a good amount of soft corals. But then you would want them to thrive and they wont because you dont have enough lighting or the water chemistry wont allow it...etc.... You can fix the water chemistry by doing water changes to compensate for the lower cost equipment, but many of us would like to spend more time enjoying the display than maintaining yet.

The impossible is doable, it is just that it may not be efficient. The same Boeing 747 that is flying today is a lot different than what it was 30 years ago. The old model can still fly, but they are so inefficient... We enhance the hell of out it for efficiency and safety.....So if you like a challenge, please let us know when you conquer it. I still have questions to ask after 10 years of keeping reefs and another 20 years of freshwater...

lenny as i stated i know how to keep a reeftank with halon lighting question is can i do it with bright flourecent lights.i know it sound impossable, but as the seabees say the diffecult we do right away--the impossable takes a little longer.hope i never reach the point where im so know it all that i know all the answers.i will only add copapods that along with fish that feed only mico alges that the tank produces.i realized that you took the salesmans pitch.i never did.you just take the tact this is the only way the salesman say i can do it--i don,t agree with the pitch.hope i havent agrivated you,i am jist trying to do the impossable.
