It's a mistery no one will ever know I had my boy who had a mini colony of the sopranos about 15 heads. He has had theM for about a year and a half started only with one head and not so long ago they just started melting, why who know his tank was on check all levels normal he dips all his corals before introducing them into his tank....

Well, there is indeed some speculation about "seasonality" of zoanthids, meaning they grow, die, then grow again.

But more importantly, what are the levels in your tank? Specifically, what is your Alk at and how constant has it been?

this has been my thoughts for along time, and have had some discussion with a few guys on RC that are long time zoa keepers, MUCHO REEF, and 650,
the one thing that kinda came to mind is with the seasonal part is a slight switch in tank temp, zoa's are very hardy. but aot of times people really dont know what to look for when they start to melt or for zoa pox which can come from parameter changes and temp change's or over look the 2 basics zoa nudi's and pyrimid snails

i have seen zoas melt before and then come back alive. my cousin had a 6polyp Purple Hornet frag they melted and didnt open for about 2 months. one day they opened up again ad started growing new polyps. So if they melt, just keep them in your tank. maybe a miracle can happen and they can come back.

Hmmm. Had 8 Purple hornets that were melted and they got tossed after a few weeks of not opening and looking like crap... maybe I should've held onto them for a little longer

My LA Lakers colony melted from 30 polyps to a .5 cm spot of flesh. The flesh looked like a closed polyp. It stayed like that for about 2 months and it has now started to sprout polyps. I have 3 polyps that look like regular LA Lakers and one polyp that looks like a morph of some kind.

i think the real meaning of "melt" is when a zoa starts to close up never open up and starts shrinking into nothing until they dissappear from the frag. i bought some rastas before then the next day they just closed up and never opened then i left the frag disk in the tank and after a few days it was flesh clean white.

I believe in what Josh was saying. i think what he said is possible.
