Mabey they are try to make a big name to make up for a small body part lmfao
I use to be all for it and thought it was a fun way to ID corals now I find it boring, drab, and played out past the point of annoying especially if your trying to charge too much for a coral

i dont believe in over the top priced corals that's $150 an eye or polyp.
but i think corals should have names so you know which one is which.

that worked a few years ago before everybody and they're brother starting naming corals, not too mention calling the same exact coral by 10 different names now it's over saturated. I think it still works for the pieces that have stuck over the past few years but naming every coral you get in a new shipment is a little pointless imo

I agree with common names to avoid tying up your tongues with strange scientific terms but in reality it's just a pricing gimmick nothing more , this is why it is good to know especially if your new to the hobby and some schlep is trying to sell you a tea biscuit as a rare double green- bubble gum - Wookie - endor chalice!! Lol I have seen it happen before . I think it's a shame but what can u really do about it other than educate yourself on corals.

By the way jerl good thread.

I have no real problem with names because it helps finding what I want and makes it easier to look up if I have a question about care. The problem is the abuse to gouge and my pet peeve of calling a living thing "limited edition". The whole LE thing to me just says I am either being gouged or this is a rare coral that probably shouldn't have been farmed in the first place

You just answered your own question my friend!!!! Thank God I have never been into the name game.lol
For me, if it's pretty, I like, I have the room in my tank, and the price is affordable I buy it.LOL
One thing though, the minute I hear the words "Limited Edition" I walk.:sgrin:

being a noob to SW from FW, i've seen/read many LE that have been selling for 5+ yrs. i must say that many of them are eye candy. and i do agree that many do not belong in a tank. IMO, as rare as they would be to a hobbyist, i would rather leave them in their natural environment & enjoy watching them on nat geo. =)
