If you want to speakin general terms, we have men and women. We have names to tell everyone apart. If you look at flowers such as roses and dahlias, they have names for their look and corals too.

Im all for something not to be le and driving prices up. I only care for names to make describing them easier. Like if i said i was looking for a pink and green zoo, there could 20+ different varieties and they wouldnt know which onei wanted.

Bamm hit the nail on the head they have names to start with like montipora and acroapora so why say this is the monster mash bubble gum le acro
Right but a rose is a rose and a carnation is a carnation and nobody should be allowed to profit by renaming it and giving it a limited edition status

It's all just a clever marketing ploy, and the sad part is, whether we admit it or not, we are the ones that make it work. We are a fickle trend based hobby that strives to have what's newest and draws the most attention. If I were selling to that market, I would be trying to create trendy names that get stuck in heads too.

being a noob to SW from FW, i've seen/read many LE that have been selling for 5+ yrs. i must say that many of them are eye candy. and i do agree that many do not belong in a tank. IMO, as rare as they would be to a hobbyist, i would rather leave them in their natural environment & enjoy watching them on nat geo. =)

Just because there rare to the hobbyists dose not make them endangered. It's the collecting process how deep, how far ect.

that's my point...why does one have to collect it? why can't it be left alone in its natural environment? if it's for research, i can understand, but if it's for profit, that defeats the purpose of the "hobby" ideal.

I get that point and it should ne mark le or rare but those guys are putting le and rare on grime slimed across now not ever coral should be marked rare or le they do it the make the cash and it not right
That is very true and if difficulty in collection is the reason why it is rare then i can see the added expense since it would cost more to collect.

I like the named corals !! Too me it's a fun part of the hobby keep track of a coral as it's propagated !! I like sps so it's not on level of chalices or some polyps which IMO get way out of hand that's why I don't buy them! I am willing too spend $100 on a really really colorful acro though which I've done twice!! Usually i spend in $50 range for nice sps ! But I want colorful sps I put a lot of time and effort into my tank so for me it's worth extra $ too be able do google search on a named coral and see how it might look when it grows out ! Also fun too see unknown sps turn into a gem !
So I guess it's all what ur into !
If u don't like named corals or expensive corals I understand but as it's always brought up in these arguments you don't have too by them!

Well, if people were not willing to pay $$$$$$ for a name then LE/etc would not list for $$$$$.

Now when I see something called super this or aussie that I expect it will cost my idea of "way too much". But I see people buying 1" of something for $1-300 everyday.

Same concept of name brand shoes, shirts, etc.

At the Swap, Live Aquaria did a session that also discussed the price of fish in particular. In every slide in addition to the real costs of livestock acquisition was supply and demand, and general market as it relates to HYPE.

Sorry fellas but I'm just keeping it real!!

I believe in names .. it really helps to ID corals.. dont believe in high price thats why if you want to keep it REAL.. you just wait ..let somebody else buy it..grow it and once all the fever is gone then you get it cheaper..as simple as that.. I wanted Purple hornets since they came out but I was not gonna pay $150+ for one polyp.. so I waited, I had to wait for I think almost 2 yr and I got a frag of 4 polyps for $25.. and now I am happy and it is in my tank :afro:.. In the other hand, If I post for sale "pink green zoas", you wont even look at my thread, but if I put chong bongs , there is a big chage somebody will open and at least check the thread..

I keep reading post about "not name the coral or why is so expensive".. just dont buy it ! I know newbies will buy it since they dont know .. geez I was a newbie and I paid $150 for a "unique green brain" from New World Aquarium, now I know the unique green brain goes for $40 or $60.. eventually you will learn to associate price with specimen..

now anybody interested in my red paly with green center, big paly..?????

or known as Jason fox God of war??? :approve:
