I deal with the pursuit of pleasing aesthetics everyday, it rules my life :Hydrogen:
perhaps if the thread were titled Aesthetics of Aquasculpture it would have had a better chance of not ruffling peoples feathers.
In the pursuit of a natural looking aquascape, things such as eggcrate, pvc pipes, powerheads, and other equipment all should hidden as much as possible. I hate seeing any equipment in my tank, but it's necessary to the health of the animals. I've tried to minimize it by using
vortechs for flow. To give my rocks an interesting look I used acrylic rods to stack them. I had a bare bottom tank, but hated the way it looked so I added sand. These were all choices I made based on the aesthetic appeal to my eye.
So I agree with the OP's opinion that eggcrate looks unattractive in an reef environment, I will also say that it could have been expressed in different manner

And my next tank will be rimless! :grouphug:
