I know this is not the nudibar or the correct forum for this thread, however, due to the sensitive nature of this information I figure it would be read much more if posted in the GD forum rather than the nudibar. Mods, if you don't agree, then feel free to move it. With that said, read on for your health and wellbeing:

Prevent Swine Flu - Good Advice - Pass on to you children & grandchildren, friends & neighbors

Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years. He has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital , Bombay Hospital , Saifee Hospital , Tata Memorial etc.. Presently, he is heading our Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W).

The following message given by him, I feel makes a lot of sense and is important for all to know

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

I suggest you pass this on to your entire e-list. You never know 20 who might pay attention to it - and STAY ALIVE because of it.

Stay well and be healthy,
Russ

Thanks Russ for the great thread my wife is thinking about getting the h1 shot for my kids but I'm a little nervous about it. I told her that not always the first batch of shot is good what makes me think is that I saw in tv a whole bunch of nurses that don't want to take it and that seems funny to me.

All that advice in Russ's post is good advice ( though it may not all be proven in scientific studies yet ) especially the hand washing. It is also important to try and avoid people with symptoms of flu ( fever, muscle aches, cough ) or at least stay 3 feet away if you have to be in contact. Also, if you have children under 6 months old living at home with you ( need to be at least 6 months old to get the first shot ), it is highly recommend that caregivers and other people living in the home get the flu shot ( regular and H1N1 ).

I'd like to address a post above. The H1N1 flu vaccine is no different than the ' regular ' flu vaccine. The way the vaccines are made is that researchers attempt, using epidemiology and extensive testing, monitoring, to predict which strains will be the most prevelant here. They do this by monitoring the flu season in the southern hemisphere, which is earlier than ours. Once the decision is made as to which strains to include in the vaccine is made, the process of manuafacturing the vaccine is made. This takes a few months. Once this process is begun, it is not possible to add another strain which is why the H1N1 is being made as a separate vaccine. The research was not completed until this year's batch of vaccine was in the midst of the manuafacturing process. Next year it will most likely be included as one of the strains in the ' regular flu ' vaccine.

Another thing to understand is that the flu shot does not contain live, or even whole virus, but rather viral proteins modified to induce an immune response, so that the body can then recognize a real flu virus before it can fully infect the body. It is cultured in chicken eggs, so those with egg allergies cannot get it. Since it is not a live virus, you cannot get the ' flu ' ( as some irresponsible people have been stating in the media ) from the flu shot. You may get a reaction, the most common of which is soreness in the shoulder receiving the shot and a low grade fever or achiness for a day.

The nasal vaccine, on the other hand, is a live, though attenuated ( weakened ) virus which cannot survive past the upper respiratory system in a HEALTHY person and therefore cause infection. The disadvantage is that immunocompromised people ( such as those on chemo or certain diseases ), children under 2 years old ( IIRC ), asthmatics and those with other respiratory illnesses, cannot receive this vaccine.

Another thing to add, those alcohol based hand cleansers do NOT replace hand washing. Those things really don't kill the bacteria on yours hands, Purell has a big racket going here.

Actually, Purell, if used correctly is pretty effective but it has to be used correctly. Many people dont properly wash their hands either.

Vitamin C will not do squat, you'll pee most of it out.

N, as stated, if you need to supplement as opposed to getting Vit. C naturally, then you should make sure the 'C' has Zinc to boost absorption ;)

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.
