A vendor can deliver the products to a get together, but just those products that were in the group buy. They can't show up with the products and then set up a table.

I know this may seem a bit - tedious? In a sense.

But for instance - a vendor comes to your "meet" with the pre-arragaged group buy items. And you know that the vendor drives around with a van of aquarium goodies.

You realize - you need more biopellets for your reactor, because it jammed or something.

Is it "ilegal" to approach the vendor and ask him to sell you the biopellets? - as long as he didn't "pedal" them around the "meet".

Thanks for the response M.

However what I think I need to clarify about my "jerking" around post - theres kind of no way to really know if you are infact being jerked around. I'm not saying a seller is stating one price and then simply asking for more.

The seller is responding with the announcement that there has been a higher "bid" made. How do you know if there really in fact has been a higher bid made?

I have not only dealt with this here, but on craigslist it seems to be a common practice. (Not entirely relevant, just trying to showcase that the intent of a "best offer" is not always to just indicate that the buyer is willing to negotiate a lower price if need be.)

This sounds like a question you should be asking on Craigslist.
We do not allow auctions of corals on this site.
Thx.

You'll find if that does happen a member will call the seller out over it. We also don't allow auction on the site.

If our rules ultimately state that a vendor can only deliver goods sold during the GB, then THAT is the rule.

Thanks for the clarification josh and kathy!! I think its a great set of rules and works well for everyone. Like I said before I think if I ever do a m&g again I will offer 10 spots for the event. That way it stays small and is in no way of breaking any of the rules for a larger event. What do you guys think about doing a slot method?

In light of the recent events here on this site(bans, suspensions, rumors, innuendo and backtalking) I think someone has to say it. COULD WE PLEASE JUST MOVE ON. This entire situation has been blown completely out of proportion and control and has made reasonable rational people act completely out of character. I have spoken to EVERYONE involved and there is waaaaaaaaay too much to solve with a simple PM or RB or a post. You all know exactly what I am referring to. I deal with most of you on a regular basis, and I really think there needs to be a time-out and regrouping, because MR has NEVER been about ugly, it has always been a COMMUNITY.

I must agree with this. Now, I don't know most of you, but I met some cool people at the last meet and greet, and guess what? I met them through this forum. Let's get these guidelines done, and move on. It's obvious that the recent event has quite a few people heated, but this thread doesn't seem like the place to gripe about it. The last few posts seem to be getting more constructive so let's keep it going and get on the same page.

Meh MR is perfectly fine the way it is.

To all the people complaining, without the people who created this website in the first place, you probably wouldn't have half as many as frags, knowledge, and friends. Sure, you can say but hey, we got reefcentral. Well reefcentral ain't a close community like manhattanreefs. It's nice to find people who share a common interest. Who else are you going to talk to about your reef tank? Be thankful there is such a thing as Manhattan Reefs. Do you know any other club dedicated for REEFS in the NEW YORK CITY area?

Follow the rules, move on. Lately there's been a lot of BS going on that makes this site look bad. For the past month when I come on, in the back of my head I EXPECT to see some sort of thread with just drama.

Not only are people going way off topic, but it seems that a lot of people are deliberately trying to poke holes in the rules.

Don't complain about the rules being complex if you are trying to make it fail. This started as 3 rules and got big very fast, mostly because people start asking questions like

Is it "ilegal" to approach the vendor and ask him to sell you the biopellets? - as long as he didn't "pedal" them around the "meet".

The rule that would cover this is either a vendor is at the event or dropping off a group buy for the event. Asking if you are allowed to ask someone something is stupid, we are not trying to stifle the free flow of livestock, products or knowledge. It is designed to make things fair and even.

The more questions like this that you ask the longer the rule list gets.

I agree there is alot of drama here, but you get that with all of these forum sites (not just reef related sites). The drama doesnt make mr look bad I dont think. Its the way the drama is handled and I have to say all of the mods around here keep pretty cool. That makes this place look great. Now lets get back to commenting about THE FIRST POST MADE IN THIS THREAD and not the mr community.... :)

Never an issue. But NO, MR is not paying for your alcohol. :)

Just wanted to clarify so that people didn't think that MR was trying to squash all get togethers.

Awhile back I remember a lot of times that people would see who was around to grab a drink. I don't see it as often anymore, but you never know...

Maybe I'll have an MR brewery opening party one of these days...

The rules state no admission fees, but also states that there is to be a shared cost for food.

I'm assuming this is at the host's discretion?

I understand that there is no admission fee, but maybe there could be a food fee..

You can ask people to chip in for food, do not charge admission or more than the cost of the food. Pass a hat around until you have enough money for the food. All of those self help and 12 step programs get EXACTLY the amount of money they need for events, food and space rental by passing a hat. There is no extra money left at the end of the day. We do not want to micromanage these events, but we need the rules so that people don't try to take advantage of others.

Again, maybe it hasn't been made clear from the previous posts and the initial rules listing, DO NOT CHARGE ADMISSION/DUES/FEES.

I know... It used to be pretty frequent. Hey, what ever happened to Herman? He was usually at the center of those gatherings!

The guy fell of the face of the earth. Last I heard he was living in NJ with 4 brand new empty tanks in his house that he never had time to fill. I know he is in the restaurant business and gets pretty busy when they are doing the design and construction. The only person I know who would know where he is also fell off the face of the earth.

That's a shame... he had some pretty amazing stories that he would tell after a few drinks!

I think some people are taking this to the extreme. MR is not instituting marshall law or forming a secret police to monitor your bowel movements. You are free to plan and host any kind of gathering you want but, if you use MR to organize the event than you need to follow MR's rules.

I'm sure Josh, and the mods don't want to know about everytime you have someone over to look at the tank.

Also, I don't know of any other website that even offers to cover ANY of the expenses of member events. People need to be more reasonable and step back and get the whole picture, instead of harping on pointless minutiae. To be honest, I don't envy Josh's work and you couldn't pay me enough to monitor this site every day amd I'm sure most people here would agree, so cut him and the mods some slack. This is pretty much a labor of love.

I think the rules are more than fair and it shouldn't be difficult to follow them. I don't think anyone is going to be awakened at 5am by flashbang grenades and shouting from an MR SWAT team because you had a few people over and didn't get permission. Just calm down and stop making it a bigger deal than it is. If people got this worked up over what our actual government does on a daily basis we might be in a better situation right now.
