Mods.,

I second Steve's motion to split this thread. Sorry to have contributed to thread drift.

Judy,
May I suggest a 'hippo' on the hip or a 'Dory" on the derriere. Perhaps a Nemo on the nape or a perc on the pect.?
Steve
PS.
There, a bit of light weight levity of the kind John uses to scatter and diffuse us with. Usually when things get serious, have you noticed how the oddball threads are tossed in to break things up?

Only when the MAC stuff gets heavy.. This one slipped in under the radar.

lol, sorry about the label.

By the way, I really didn't want to bash LFSs. I know you folks represent the best of the best in LFSs. You are to be encouraged. I was lucky enough to live close to a very good LFS for many years and never thought about buying online. But now that I'm not quite as lucky I must admit online sales have become a more viable option for me. 3 of the last 4 fish I've purchased locally were members of the eat like pig until skinny and become a floater within 6 weeks club. I asked the owner privately and politely about the possibility of cyanide and I was basically given a dose of greenwash.

As well, I was, and still am extremely hesitant to post when words keep getting shoved into our mouths here. No one said a word (except Steve, whom from everything I've read of his work, I admire greatly) about online superiority vs. LFS's

There should not be the country club tiered levels that exist in this industry.

Bottom line is we are all for ending cyanide use period. I'll be the first to admit there are many onliners that are not at all in this for the positive change that I am. And I think the stellar LFS reps on this board will agree that many of their peers fall into that bucket also.

As Sciguy said, at least with online stores, the boards will quickly shut you down if you misrepresent, don't provide service, and generally aren't sincere in your mission. AMDA could be the checks and balances for the B&M stores if such a feedback system was in place where anyone with a computer could report the conditions (the problem is getting them reported fairly..moderated would help). In that world, the 2 local stores to me would most likely be closed next week.

I made the conscious decision to change careers, lose money monthly and try to make a change, however small in the grand scheme, in what little time I have left on earth.

There are wholesalers on this board I would love to support as I think their values deserve supporting, but I can't. So I buy from the 104th st place that everyone raves about on this forum, and am left utterly speechless at the utter disregard they have for the corals which they represent as the industries finest.

But I am allowed to support the big captive bred supplier, and to grow as much variety as possible. I can also play the "martyr" game with the best of em by helping every customer I can set up prop tanks and not need to buy from me ever again. Teach them to buy a coral once and have it be with them until the end.

I can also send what little money I have to help with getting nets to divers. I don't deal in fish, but know damn good and well the damge being done by both the food industry and many underfunded collectors.

Please let it also be known that I have the upmost respect for all of you in this forum that have years of fieldwork, drum beating support, and fighting the good fight under your belt. I too was unaware until a few years ago that cyanide was still in use and the HUGE problem that it is. Why? Because many moons ago the LFS I trusted assured me that the cyanide problem ended in the late seventies.

Because of my reading, I understand why I'm offered $10-15 clown triggers each week....and each week I want to choke them!

I may be newer blood in here, but damnit, that doesn't mean I don't count or don't lay awake many a sleepless nights racking my brain on how I can help you on the frontline. I know many think the internet is evil, I'm really trying hard to change that perception as some in here fight to change the perception of their organizations as well.

Peace to all, Bryan

Just why is it that some really have a disdain for LFS? Go to ANY online forum, and see this store and that store bashed all to hell for the mistakes of the END USER. How many hobbyists get their start in this by virtue of an etailer? "I saw this really neat picture of a fish tank....." It will never make economic sense to have an aquarium shipped - except in the case of custom work, so the big online places have a more limited capacity than a shop.

Yes, there are some crappy stores out there, just as there are crappy outfits in any business. Spend money there, they stay in business. If nobody spent there, they would soon go under, but I've heard every excuse in the book as to why people will shop at a crummy store. There are plenty of crummy etailers too - I've dealt with a couple before I became a shop owner.

Here in ATL, there is a good relationship between the reef club and many of the local stores. We meet at local stores, we trade frags at local stores, we have a rule that no money can change hands between hobbyists for livestock or equipment inside a store, but plenty is done quietly and discreetly in adjacent parking lots. This at least shows some respect for the shopkeeper, and club members DO open their wallets on meeting night and support the stores that support the club. Sponsor stores also give a discount to paid members. I think this type of relationship is good all around for retailers and hobbyists.

How many etailers ever ask if a buyer has a tank? I ordered twice online, from two different places, and neither one asked me if I had a marine tank... Sure there are some caring online vendors, but many of them have either disappeared, or been gobbled up by the big ones.

Logicalreef, just why is it that you do not support the wholesalers that you would like to, and instead spend on 104th St.? Is it because of their policy to only sell to bricks and mortar stores?

There are "country club tiered levels" in every industry.... why should this be any different? There is a beautiful store about 15 miles or so from me - very high end - and God bless the owners, they are a really nice couple, I like them a lot, and I have great respect for them, and they can get twice the money for some specimens than I ask, because they have a higher end store, and their customers have no problem paying more. I'm more "no frills" - there are plenty of customers for both of us. I cater more to the "hard core frugal reefer"... In fact, I don't carry freshwater and this other store I speak of does, and rather than refer people to the nasty full-line shops just down the road, I refer them to the high-end shop because I believe the quality is well worth it.

The bottom line is that yes, we'd like cyanide to be stopped - however there are plenty out there who truly do believe that the problem ended in the 70s or 80s. Either they are ill-informed or just in denial - but ask any wholesaler if all their fish are net-caught, and of course they will say yes. To admit that they have juiced fish would be the end of that business. Some of those people don't know, don't care so unless the problem is corrected at the SOURCE (to get back on topic...) it will never be corrected.

time for a 2 thread tie in

in the same way that 'bad' lfs's encourage some to use the internet, and 'bash' the 'ridiculous advice' establishments, i've come to be highly suspicious of 'sticker' org.s', in a sense

not to say that amda is like mac, but after seeing all the ridiculous behavior of that org-i now have to have a distrust of most, if not all, others

once bitten, twice shy

this is another way in which mac has caused far greater damage to the hobby/industry than they probably realize
