hey Kalk

let me explain

lets say "you" use a 12 x 12 box with 1.5" blanks

"you" could fit about 4 medium corals per cubic ft box

most people might ask "you" to email them a list/pics, to fill out the rest of the box

about 15-20 lbs

depends on your incentive discounts for shipping rates...ie
volume/company

"you" might have free pick up scheduled for the latest time of day for the carriers route

same for your regular airport to airport freight charges with the incentives :)

anyway, alot I see on ebay break the rules and link to their site also, from the listing, instead of the ME page

thats not enforced either though I guess

Oh I get it now. So in *addition* to breaking eBay's policy about the sale of live animals, you are implying that many (most) people break another eBay policy about adding additional items that aren't listed as items for sale, to the same order?

And of course many newbies don't realize that items not listed on eBay but sold through contact achieved through it aren't covered by any of eBays buyer proctection policies.

So one could really get rooked with the 'add on' pieces, and the buyer wouldn't have any real recourse because they skirted around the rules.

Brilliant - I wouldn't have thought about that - but it's a great way to unload brown or damaged corals with a little slight misrepresenation ;)

Ah the potential to screw people never ends....

Of course I'm sure that *all* of the people pimping corals on eBay are honest businesspeople running legitimate businesses.... and I'm also your fairy godmother.

hey jenn

Lets say they don't even sell coral on ebay, just link to a site that they do from the ME page, which is ok I think

they sell drygoods on ebay only

you got a problem with that to??

ok jenn, whats wrong now???

Don't you think that if someone did what you say(unloading tons of damaged corals) that it would reflect negitivly in their feed back

I just was givin a hypothedical explanation to kalk that seemed rational to me

I'd rather just list 3 or 4 lots myself, anyway

YES IT WOULD SHOW IN FEEDBACK IMO !!!!!!

Most ebay users as you should know take great pride in their feed back.

Not sayin that all are honest though.

But hey neither are the pet shops.(as you should know as well)and there probably is ALOT more of them IMO.The local one here just got shut down cause the guy was dealin on the side ..I think

*IMO*what ALOT ( "of course not all or most since most are probably great")(pet shops) are know for is*IMO*

selling a bunch of crap to niave newbies

thats why they turn to the .comers in the first place

and hey they(pet shops) dont have their feedback posted Internationaly for the world to see do they?

oh well

here we go agin

lets see how you want to reflect the .comers image today

heck no one has to buy from them if they dont WANT to

You can't post feedback about a non-eBay transaction. If you buy X on eBay and buy Y and Z along with it, but those items weren't listed, you're on your own and you cannot post feedback about a transaction that didn't transpire through eBay. If you buy blue zoas that were auctioned, and then order "other stuff" on the side, but you don't get exactly what you were expecting - but the blue zoas were exactly as advertised, there's no cause for bad feedback, and a seller would have cause to complain. Then the feedback could be mutually withdrawn after the dust settled.

You obviously don't know how eBay works very well.

Yep people sell dry goods all the time. I have NO problem with this - they aren't living things, they are merchandise. Quit comparing guns and butter, please.

Yep there are lots of bad brick and mortar places, as well as dot-coms. We've been over that ad-nauseum too. The law of the jungle usually prevails and sooner or later those bad shops, both real and virtual, go bust.

Just in the last few weeks I saw a locally based eBay seller ;) suddenly depart from eBay, and I'd bet it wasn't his idea either but if you're going to sell stuff, you'd better ship it after it's paid for. This guy was selling literally thousands of items - dry goods, not just limited to pet stuff... but I guess enough people complained and it *appears* that he was shut down.

Same happens in the real world. Screw enough people and they catch on.

Now, now Eddie you are almost implying that ALL brick and mortar stores are out to screw newbs. I don't think it's so much that they see a newb coming and get out the big net, but newbs don't educate themselves, and not all LFS owners/workers are of the same opinion, OR not everyone has their skills up to date.

I don't sell undergravel filters because in my opinion they are antiquated and inefficient. However I have customers who have used them for 40 years and swear by them. Who are you or I to say they're wrong? Healthy, breeding fish for many years on end sounds like a "success" to me.

When people are busy slamming LFS for the stupid purchases they were encouraged to make, I have NEVER EVER heard anybody admit something like this:

"Well, the LFS suggested a Euroreef skimmer for my 120-gallon system but that seemed really expensive so I bought a Sea Clone instead."

It happens EVERY day.

I don't carry "bargain basement" substandard equipment, but I can tell you there are plenty who won't spend the money rightly the first time, go out and cut corners and then ***** about it later.

Mitch is right - many *advanced* hobbyists look for bargains online for the high end equipment, but the majority don't.

I also agree with both gentlemen that it's BOTH the $4 bottle of fish food AND the newb dropping hundreds or thousands on a new system, that keep the brick and mortar going.

Not too many people discover the hobby through a website - they see it in somebody's home, office or a fish store, and they don't run to the internet first to get their setup.

Selling the rare and unusal on eBay is nice, but who will support the trade with the 95% of brown corals that arrive every week?

How many complete novices are going to want to drop hundreds on Acanthastea when they don't know if they can keep a mushroom or button polyp alive? Who do they call when they have questions or need their water tested because they aren't sure they are testing it correctly, or whether their cheap test kit they bought instead of a good one, is still accurate?

Deviating I supposed from the already-hijacked intent of this thread, but I think I've made my point. Keep plugging away, Eddie... by the time you get it figured out I'll be retired anyway.

you probably will retire before me jenn

I still got almost 40 years to go

If a disgruntled customer got shafted as u say

I'd guess they would probably still leave bad feedback about the ebay coral also

GET REAL,This is the real world

they would also report any other infractions to ebay the seller did also

IMO

also most ebay users with high feed back have lots of repeat customers that continue to praise them over and over

If not many people learn about the hobby thru the net then why do you hang here all the time, personaly the first specialty light I saw and bought come out of fama from Hamilton

I need to spend time with the family today and am getting bored now anyway

peace

all feel free to flame away

btw some ebay users get the unlimited incomin plan with nextel..then offer a direct connect and cell # for direct personal service

or 1800 #'s

anyway

I'll keepa plugging as you say

heck what do I know about sellin coral on ebay

oh...I'm not implying anymore about pet shops than you are ebay sellers  *imo*there are both bad ebay sellers and pet shops*just imo* is all I am saying

you stated before that E sales only make up a small % of coral sales

so that must mean that statisticly there would be more bad pet shops(just my uneducated guess)kinda like statistcly you have way more chance of dieing in a car reck than a plane crash, since there are "ALOT" more cars and you are in them more often

I am slow, and this is just my opinion based on your comments and nothin more

nothin I say is *stated* as *fact* just *IMO* is all, so "read at your own risk" (EVERYONE)

I'm wrong about alot as you have shown jenn

and still learnin, and probably will be till I retire

and also, mabey you dont get what I am saying

what is the diff if they buy from the drygood person that links them to the coral site from the ME page

or the person who lists the livestock on ebay

or the .comers who sponsor this forum that you love ?

NONE IMO

atleast the ebay live coral buyer can still try to strong arm the seller with feedback

why should all the "VERY HONEST EBAY SELLERS" have to quit sellin, and the "VERY HAPPY CUSTOMERS" have to quit buying, cause a few are bad (iseo)
*in someone elses opinion*, and few *might* think "they should" dictate the industry

dito for pet shops *imo*

jenn
