This industry is pretty fucked up when suppliers resort to cheap gimmicks like this. This was sent to us with a stocklist from a well known whoresaler.

True, disgusting. But what can you expect. Look at the fish itself!

That is SO not funny. I'm no bleeding heart over fish, but that's just wrong on many levels :(

I can't believe they thought that was a cute idea.

They are going to be a smash hit without a doubt. Soon there will be a message for every holiday and once the holiday passes, there won't be any need for the message so the fish will be promptly flushed. Afterall, who wants the possibilty of having a Merry Christmas fish breeding with a Happy Easter one and then you get one fugly Hapmer Eastermas fish.

Guaranteed themselves to always have a market. Imagine, one day you might be able to get them customized. Ebay headquarters will have a large display tank with parrotfish which have their company logo emblazoned on each side.

I was appalled when I got this picture in my email with a stock list.

This is just the "next step" - that's been coming for a while. Previously I've seen red and green "painted" fish around Christmas, purple and yellow "painted" fish around Easter... this is not new.

I don't know what's worse - that somebody would do this to the fish, or that there are people ignorant enough to buy them :(

Don't know but it was their headliner in the stock list, which I did not open.

It's still in my inbox at work - I'll try to remember to check tomorrow and let you know.

I'm sure it's legit - that wholesaler carries tons of freshies and they carry lots of the "painted" varieties :( I can't say as I know of a freshie vendor that doesn't carry "painted" fish.

For the record, I don't carry them... there are plenty of fish that have naturally brilliant colours, or have been selectively bred for same. Injecting them with latex or otherwise "tatooing" them shouldn't be necessary.

I think the blurb in the email said something about that fish being "tattooed".

Stay tuned, I'll post again tomorrow if I can remember :)

Yuck! There ought to be laws against such garbage!

If Naesco is looking for a topic to tilt windmills against this would be a good one.

They are asking for $22 apiece for those.

They will only be available this week and there is a very limited quantity.

They aren’t for everybody…they are a tattooed painted blood parrot. Check out the picture…

I'll say they aren't for everybody. They ought to be for nobody :(

The painted fish is for real. I saw one at my local petshop. It had three colors painted onto its scales! I also deplor this. It should be banned.

The last issue of Tropical Fish Hobbyist had an article about marking and staining fish. I will post about it, after I have read it more carefully.

Is this really anything new? Haven't glass fish been painted for years?

BTW, I think it is pretty lame.

Yes, they have - but that doesn't mean that it's "OK"... it's just another dirty part of this trade and many of us refuse to carry creatures that have been adulterated or tampered with in this manner.

Personally I think it's pretty abhorable, period, but to "headline" a stock list with something this blatently disgusting just makes it even more wrong somehow.

If nobody bought these monstrosities, the practice would fade out, but as long as there's a LFS that will buy them and sell them to hobbyists, this kind of thing will only get worse, and not better.

I guess the next wave will be the usual Easter array of purple and yellow "painted" (rhymes with "tainted") fishes...
