Jaime,
You recently wrote;
"In the Philippines fish collectors are poorer than they were 25 years ago and coral reefs are in worse shape than then. Fishing grounds have been overexploited and some species are not found were once abundant.

Personally, I do not think that the status quo is an option. I'd rather to see something radical happening in the Philippines and Indonesia."
...yes, Jaime wrote it...
Are you some kind of radical?
As least as radical as I....whatever that means.
[I think it means you don't roll over for self centered reasons and personal perks so easily]

Twenty years gone and still asking the industry to put something back. We all have seen how "most" of the stakeholders do not react, fisherfolks are still getting morsels from an industry that makes "good money". Yes, the status quo is not an option. Probably the industry needs to learn "the hard way".

Righty I just think that Fox guarding the henhouse statement might be misinterpreted by some of fishers. Someone from another culture might be offended by it. If there is to be any type of meaningful conservation efforts, it will absolutely critical to have the help and support of the people that live in the effected areas. At least one of the messages that is coming out of the Philippines is that the collectors feel like they have been mislead and not dealt with fairly. Winning back trust the second time is going to be much harder than gaining it initially. We should be very careful choosing our words because it might be next to impossible for someone with English as a second language to interpret the tone of the posts. I can't always tell the tone of the posters here and I'm English only. I doubt you can always tell either.Mitch

Good call. At the same time, I think people need to feel free to post what they actually think, and as you point out wording is important.

PS
How do we know they don't view the NGOs as foxes trying to put a tax on the eggs coming out of "their" henhouse.

I think that was my point I just didn't express it well. :D

This just in from the MAC website;
Dear MAC friends and colleagues,

As Chair of the Marine Aquarium Council Board of Directors, I would like to join Paul in announcing his departure as MAC Executive Director and President in June 2007. After nine years with MAC, Paul is moving on to new challenges and opportunities.

On behalf of the MAC Board of Directors, I would like to express our enormous appreciation for Pauls accomplishments in establishing and growing MAC and the MAC Certification system. Paul took up the challenge of starting MAC in June 1998 and worked as the sole MAC staff person for several years, formally setting up the organization, working with stakeholders around the world, drafting the initial MAC Standards, and raising funds for MAC to grow and fulfill its large and complex mission. Under Pauls leadership, the first international standards for a live animal fishery/trade were launched in 2001, extending across the entire chain of custody of this global industry from reef to retailer.

So, its now official.

Leadership ...or lack thereof....is what it was always all about.
The chances for reform of this group rest with the decisions of the people deciding, ie. the BOD ...and then with the one decided upon.
The lofty goals and mission statements mean as little as any ordinary business plan until implemented.
Nothing runs itself .

From Mac News First Quarter 2007 (May 18, 2007)

Message from the Chair of the MAC Board of Directors

Dear MAC friends and colleagues,

As Chair of the Marine Aquarium Council Board of Directors, I would like to join Paul in announcing his departure as MAC's Executive Director and President in June 2007. After nine years with MAC, Paul is moving on to new challenges and opportunities.

On behalf of the MAC Board of Directors, I would like to express our enormous appreciation for Paul's accomplishments in establishing and growing MAC and the MAC Certification system. Paul took up the challenge of starting MAC in June 1998 and worked as the sole MAC staff person for several years, formally setting up the organization, working with stakeholders around the world, drafting the initial MAC Standards, and raising funds for MAC to grow and fulfill its large and complex mission. Under Paul's leadership, the first international standards for a live animal fishery/trade were launched in 2001, extending across the entire chain of custody of this global industry from reef to retail.

From a one-person start-up organization, Paul has grown MAC to an international company with staff and activities in Fiji and other Pacific Islands, France, Germany, Indonesia, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Stakeholders from many more countries contact MAC regularly to request assistance as well. Paul has not only advanced MAC's core mission as an international, multi-stakeholder standards setting body, but also initiated significant capacity building programs and partnerships in Asia, Europe, North America, and the Pacific.

In developing countries, MAC's capacity building work is improving the sustainability of the fishery and trade and thereby improving the lives of the collectors and disadvantaged communities on whom this industry and hobby depend. As a result, skilled collectors with improved livelihoods are supplying an increasing volume, variety, and quality of MAC Certified marine ornamentals from managed reefs that have marine protected areas. In market countries, Paul initiated expansive outreach and awareness raising efforts to communicate with the public and marine ornamental stakeholders - especially the industry and hobbyists - about the potential for a responsible marine aquarium trade to support reef conservation, managed fisheries, healthy marine animals, and safe, sustainable livelihoods for collectors of marine ornamentals.

Under Paul's direction, MAC has become the global leader in transforming the marine aquarium fishery and trade to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Through the efforts of the dedicated team that Paul has assembled and managed, over one hundred MAC Certifications have been achieved by collection areas, collectors, exporters, importers, and retailers in ten countries. MAC has demonstrated that third-party certification can be adapted to the needs of rural, small-scale producers in developing countries, and to the complexities of a fishery and global chain of custody for live animals. Paul has created a network of MAC partners and supporters around the world that form a solid basis for MAC to build on in further implementing its mission in the years to come.

As a result of Paul's dedication and commitment, MAC and MAC Certification are well established for continued success in transforming the marine ornamentals trade to sustainability for the benefit of the coral reefs, fisheries, collectors, coastal communities, and responsible businesses and aquarium keepers. We wish Paul well in his future endeavors.

Signed: Steve Broad, MAC Board Chair

There is always discussion of the MAC here in this forum. I tend to read it because I find it entertaining for a variety of reasons.

Future and past aside, I cannot help but feel as though the MAC has absolutely zero impact on the trade in marine ornamentals. Nice idea, great window stickers, ZERO impact. Nothing good, nothing bad, just some nice stickers.

I guess I find it entertaining because I am just the opposite. No stickers, no press releases here. Growth? Yup, plenty of growth here. Then again, I have fishes to sell.

I look forward to the next press release. They always make for good reading.

Apply anyway. Maybe you can get the job and make a difference. Maybe by applying you will make a difference. At the very least perhaps you might want to consider not bashing a group that has finally has had some movement in the direction you have wanted it to move.

FYI,
The guy putting out the ad....is of the WWF and pulls the strings. MAC was made by them from the very beginning, for them and will continue to be. Its their ball and one must play by their rules.
Its a non profit business...not a service or a democratic organization... and the owner of the business gets to call the shots...always.

Rich,
After ruining the chances of getting a few thousand guys off cyanide and teaching them that net collecting doesn't pay?
They have spent 9 years and more millions then that proving the case against sustainability...and moving in the wrong direction.
There could be no greater crime against the trade , the reefs and the fisherman then this.

This org. has lost the cause and stood by as millions more coral heads died in the years that they spent in the office.
