Lets hope this is not being monitored by the US Government. Maybe we could have a policy like, if you can't spell don't tell.

LOL! That would eliminate a good portion of the folks here. :)

I don't think spelling counts here... maybe it should, but it doesn't.

I want to draw back from this forum a bit and concentrate my full efforts on working with the USCRTF in its efforts. I am sorry if I am unable to anwer questions posted in a timely manner.

I will keep this forum informed about the progress being made in this thread.

Here is the Powerpoint Presentation made to the USCRTF by the enforcement working group

I don't know if we should tell him but the USCRTF is not going to meet and consider the trade issues until March of 2007.
Whatever they do...will be at a glacial pace and thats just in the meetings.
If Wayne is working on it...he's the only one.

Steve, What you meant to say is that the USCRTF will meet in the Virgin Islands in October, but trade issues will not be on the agenda. The report that is being prepared based on the Sustainability Symposium (with you as a participant) will be presented to the Task Force at a meeting to be held during March 2007 in Washington, D.C. Aquarium trade issues will be addressed at the March meeting.

Almost all of you are acting like you believe that what the US Coral Reef Task Force is doing is a joke. The Task Force meetings are there for the trade to make their views known to the US government. The activities of the USCRTF should be taken seriously.

I do not believe that the intent of either the Task Force or the legislators is to punish the aquarium trade. However, if one reads the draft legislation being put forth by Congressman Ed Case, I think we should all be very concerned (if it were enacted as it is written).

The Task Force meetings are your opportunity to submit you views and to engage in a positive dialogue with the USCRTF. Hopefully, your input will facilitate a sustainable aquarium trade.

Peter,
I think most of us realize the USCRTF is a serious force. I think most of the mocking was a direct result of Wayne's taunting. If the USCRTF is truly holding the sword of Damocles above the head of the trade there really isn't much we can do about. Regardless of what they may or may not do, we don't want to scolded for something we are powerless to control. I've been hearing people cry wolf for the whole 21-years I've been in the biz.
Mitch

Damocles (dăm`əklēz), in classical mythology, courtier at the court of Dionysius I. He so persistently praised the power and happiness of Dionysius that the tyrant, in order to show the precariousness of rank and power, gave a banquet and had a sword suspended above the head of Damocles by a single hair. Hence the expression "the sword of Damocles" to mean an ever-present peril

Peter,
If the reefs are indeed in trouble...and as much trouble as claimed, then the pace in which the USCRTF acts suggests no hurry.
They are a fact of life but one to be respected only for the power they wield.
The people on the task force who know anything from real experience are very, very few.
They rely on things brought to them by people with the access to offer them things and that is why we are finally involved.
Of all the silliness brought to their attention, we may bring them something real...which is wonderful.
If you did not organize that forum in Vegas I dare say we would not be heard. If not for that, they would be relying on their other sources of news. ...and they would know no better.

Since no one else did anything for the trades benefit...you may well become its accidental, inadvertant hero. :D

Actually, Steve I agree with what you just stated. I felt compelled to organize the Sustainability Symposium to give the true reformists a voice. Overall, the Vegas Sustainability Symposium went well. The MAC's presentations that preceded the Symposium lacked substance. So, while most of us who gave talks did not have as much time to make our points, I thought the presentations were informative.

Now, we have the chance to make recommendations to the Task Force. They will not be related to "the sky is falling". They will describe the real problems (more than the cyanide issue) and recommend possible solutions. The solutions may not (and probably should not) be related to legisation. For example, one recommendation might be that the US goverment provide funding to help improve shipping and handling procedures.
