  1. DSB vs Live Rock?

It's pretty hard to feed wet sand down a PVC tube; I assume with the pre-cured sand you add it directly?
  2. Probe Questions?

Aren't the salinity monitors notoriously sensitive? That is, not really accurate?
  3. The best dosing pump???

Has anyone used the dosing pump in the McMaster catalog? Metering or peristaltic? www.mcmaster.com

  5. Brown stuff

You will still have bacteria, but the population will be very limited. So adding any fish or other living animal will most likely cause a small ammonia spike until the population can catch up. This goes for a tank at any stage. Plunking 4 heathy fish into an established reef tank will cause a...
  6. Sea Swirl on a closed-loop...

I thought vaseline was a petroleum based product that would have delirious affects on rubber gaskets (and potentially the tank). :?:
  7. Brown stuff

The entire tank is full of nitrifying bacteria, not just live rock. The sand also contains nitrifying bacteria. However, pulling all the bioballs out at once will cause another mini-cycle while the tank's population of bacteria adjusts to the load. If you don't have anything in the tank, then...
  8. How to feed DTs

According to the information I have read (Bourneman, et al.), corals generally feed most actively just after the lights go out. Polyp extension seems to be the highest at this point and is generally greater through out the night. However, DTs feeds more that just the corals (if SPS corals...

  11. copper grounding probe

A couple of points here: I had one of my pumps fail a while ago. The pump was connected to a GFCI. When I put my hand into the tank, I got one heck of a shock. The GFCI did not trip. I don't really know why the GFCI did not trip. It does not make me feel comfortable though. FWIW, the tank...
  12. DESPERATE for water - please advise

Distilled water from the grocery store would work. However, some are stored in copper containers. You would want to test for copper first. -T
  13. Beginner Coral?

You must be very careful about the type of gorgonian you get. Many of them are filter feeders and can be difficult to keep a live. Eric's book won't give you detailed information about the lighting requirements for corals. But it does give you enough information to make a more informed...
  14. Storing mixed saltwater?

I've looked into food grade/chemical grade containers before. They tend to be very expensive. I just use a rubbermaide container - one for FW, one for SW. I'm thinking about getting a 40G rubbermaide trash can for a larger holding capacity. A verticle container will also take up less space. -T
