This is a weird post but anyone have any plants, that aren't so run of the mill. You know something you can't walk into a Home Depot or Lowes and just buy?

I'm here attempting to germinate mango seeds from mangos I ate. They all have roots, because they started off in plastic bags with moist paper towels. It's been about 1 month for 1 seed and 3 weeks for the other 2. It just hit me today that they need sunlight for the leaves to actually start growing. Stupid me I know. But if anyone else has something nice, post away :).

When mine have something to show for themselves I'll post pics.

Hope you don't have a dog around. They love to to chew on the mango seed.:bablefish

I planted many before, but only one make its way to become a small bush, my dog ate them all.

Al, those are the ones from the swap?

JP, any pics?

J, I'm not the smartest person now am I?

Ming,
Does it matter which side of the seed is face up?

It doesnt matter due to geo- and photo- tropism. The roots grow down with gravity (geotropism) and the stem grows up due to vessel support looking for light (phototropism) regardless of how you plan the seed.

Kris..I'm not going to comment on your revelation about plants needing sunlight...oops, looks like I just did..lol

but here is an old trick...when you have a 'hard' seed that you want to sprout..take an emery board or piece of rough sandpaper and 'sand' one end until you just break through the outer casing to the fleshy part...it will develop roots faster and thicker :)
It is also often best to pinch off the top 2 leaves of a new plant once it has grown more than the first set of leaves.

Nice orchids Reefman!!
