I went away for 5 days. I came home to a tank FILLED with hair algae and diatoms. VERY ugly. I have been cycling my tank for 2 weeks and nitrites are still through the roof. Poor me!!!

Have to wait for tank to cylcle before cleaning crew can do their thing. In the meantime, very little light for the tank, skimmer skimming and lots of glass cleaning. Guess I will not have to worry about my eventual snails starving:headache: .

Some water changes and large turbos from fishtown should help. I find keeping the water at the cooler end also reduces the rate they grow.
Did you test for No3 and Phasphate?
It's very normal for a new tank to go thru an algae bloom.. No sympathy needed:).

hahaha sympathy?

it's your algae cycles we all go through it just like being a teenager and it sucks just like Tony said. Just wait for the cyno to start, it's worse than acne :D

Believe it or not Leslie, this phase stinks, but it is all an integral part of the tank maturing. Once you finish your ammonia cycle, then the algae cycle, you'll feel like a million bucks. The tank will look great and you'll feel like you can start imparting your 'hard knox' wisdom upon others. Welcome to the club!

I would manually remove as much as possiable, then try to keep the tank dark.

I wonder if some cheato or some other macro would be of use at this period. :scratchch

You can put snails in while the tank cycles.

You aint kidding, The snail that in my tank now went through hell and he is still going on.

Bought by someone else
Emptied his tank and threw it in a bucket
I picked it up
Cleaned all the sand
found the snail, wife named him Gary
sat in fresh water for 2 hours
Added the salt to the water
Cycled it
and now he's twice the size

They can take a beating! Everyone i spoke to said he would die, but hes fine!

I think I'll spare some snails and just wait it out. I did ask the LFS about adding a macro algae to compete for nutrients, but he was not in favor of it. Any other opinions?

What is Valonia?
