getting a powerful hang on skimmer would probably help, assuming your hangon is pretty weak. As for the canister, they will be alright, but if its going to be a reef the nitrates will be hard to control.

And if you want a sump, you can always put an overflow box on the tank, assuming you have some room behind the tank. This would also apply for alot of the better hang-ons.

Besides that looks pretty good

You can always purchase a larger Reef Ready Aquarium and set it up to replace this one if you are that concerned but remember their are many roads to get to a succesful Reef Aquarium in this hobby. I'm also one known to bend the rules a bit though.

You should be fine... the key to can. filters is keeping them clean! the more you clean them the less nitrates.

as for the skimmer... there are some ok HOB skimmers out there... AquaC makes 2 that I know of.

Get a hang on back (HOB) skimmer!

How high is the tank? You may need some sturdy rockwork to reach high up near the top. Once you get the rock nice and solid, start to put low light corals in the middle of the rock. Start with zoanthids, cheap LPS, leathers, etc.
the tank is 31" high plus the stand

you can use the canister filter, but when changing the pads out dont change all of them at once, and rotate them when changing, the very bottom pad will become the new one on top ect. this way you arent killing off all the bacteria. and you could always get a better hob skimmer or a hob refugium

Since the tank is so deep and the lighting isn't very intense, I would build up the rock a little bit so the corals can get a little more light. Otherwise it looks good.

The canisters will work if you change them REGULARLY. Throw out the media (including the sponges (don't reuse them more than once or twice). Do regular water changes and you'll be good to go.
