Just upgraded my tank and I need a bit more sand. Can I get some opinions about buying live sand online. I saw that saltwater critters has a bunch of different kinds. any suggestions about good companies to go with?
like stated above buy dry sand... it will mix and turn live. and if you add dry sand then you proably wont start a mini cycle. you could always use play sand. but rinse good first.
I dont think you can really find too many Home Depots carrying Silica free sands anymore. Check out some of the vendors here at MR that sells dry reef sand. That's what I bought and a little sand from an older tank would start the bacteria culture in your dry sand. No need to spend so much on a pack of live sand...
You can also just get the dry sand at LFS. I bought 50lbs for 20 or so. Home depot sands has alot of clay and/or silicate. But if you can find a good one, they would probably be cheaper
You guys really want to risk completely screwing up your tank because it saved you 30 or 40 bucks? If so go to Home Depot and buy their supposedly silica free sand, or silica free playsand from an Agway or wherever else.
Why not just shell out the few extra bucks and get sand from your LFS? If you havent learned yet this is not the hobby to go no frills style buying in.
And if you cant afford a good quality sand right now, youre system isnt going to die because you are lacking a few pounds or a few bags worth. Plenty of bare bottom tanks do fine......Save up and go the correct route.
jimmyr1rider i am with u def not worth few extra bucks.to go cheap and throw some crap in ur tank if not the right stuff reef sand from lfs is def not the same as the play sand from hd
