Maybe, but there are more obvious causes. Are you sure you don't have redbugs?

I don't believe it's redbugs i inspected all the frags dave gave me they looked bug free. they did go for a interceptor swim though.

I think if the polyps are coming out at night dave the health of the tank is not bad. You just need to lower the temperature to an acceptable level.
and get a thermometer that you can trust.

shaun,

I am ordering the final parts this week for the ill fated skimmer project.

I will be using uniseals to hook up up the plumbing, and attach the collection cup/tube assembly. The pump will screw onto the tubes via the pvc unions, one side is threaded (the pump side) and the other side is a slip fitting which is glued in place to the tubes leading to the skimmer. all you will need to do is attach the pump, and some tubing for the feed pump, which will be a small powerhead.

the one thing I need help with is the return tube. I will discuss that with dave at length. I will be making the skimmers to sit next to a sump. I'll figure it out with dave how to make one that can hang on the side of a tank. It might be too heavy, I'm not sure.

shaun just making sure you saw this.

Daves tank is running at 85, which I think is high enough to aggravate the sps. without a sump he is going to have to place fans directly above the tank, or get a couple of standing floor fans and have them on either side of the tank above the water line. this is also going to cause large evaporation. there is no way in water volume this small you can manually top off the tank without some large fluctuations. if he does not have an auto-top off system now is the time to get one.
the other option is to run a chiller, which I know dave will not do.

No I didn't see that. Are you using the acrylic that you have? When are you doing it? I am thinking about ordering the same skimmer as Dave and attempting to mimic his skimmer. That one can hang on the back.

85oC is too hot, that would be the cause of his problems with polyp extention.

Jon, have you thought about building yourself a Ca reactor with that tubing and just doing what Dave did with the coralife skimmer? We do have the pumps already and modifying that skimmer will be alot easier (I think) then builidng from scratch.

2 days worth of skimmate, i think it's pretty good considering my tank is only a 40 gallon with 5 little fishes and almost like 5 tiny frags.
